A.W. is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. They've been writing and playing music for the majority of their life, and has finally made a name for themself, through their work with other artists, as well as their affiliation with No Sleep Records. A.W. garnered attention through the internet, by posting videos on YouTube, as well as a Kickstarter account to have their first album recorded. They've been keeping busy since then, knocking out song after song of their unique brand of indie pop, all led by their amazing voice and talented songwriting. They are so cool, they is so punk. Drew Thomson

Andrew (or Drew) Thomson is a singer-songwriter from London, Ontario, Canada. He is best known as being the lead singer of punk/hardcore band/gang Single Mothers. And as we all know, Single Mothers are the greatest thing to happen in a long time, so of course this solo project would be just as good, and damn, it is. The Hold Steady is still influence #1 (especially songs like "Citrus"), which warrants 0 complaints. The songs have similar topics too: girls, drinking, drugs, getting out of London, all that fun stuff. Like Craig Finn before him, Drew pulls all this off with two things: honesty and sincerity. There is no frat boy front here, just an open and vulnerable depiction of someone's actual life. Not only is that commendable, but it can be relatable. It's hard to find any artist who is so open about themselves, both good and bad, and Drew is a master at this.

The songs on Honesty Is A Confidence Problem (put out by Secret Voice) are straight-forward and simple, with Drew bearing it all about himself and the people around him with only the backing of a folk/punk acoustic guitar. His self-titled (put out by No Sleep) features a lot more instrumentation, and the songs span out a little more. Both albums are astounding, and show different sides of his musical output, all the while featuring the same catharsis and lyrical content. The guy's got a great voice, and is a genius in terms of lyrics. I am a massive fan of both his band and his solo stuff. I don't think there are a ton of bands out there that I find myself not only relating to so much, but actually impact me enough to find some comfort in that relation. It's corny as hell to say, but his music has helped me out a lot, and hopefully the same can be said for you. Try and buy his music instead, but if not, enjoy.

Valentine's Day, 2015. We started with The Saddest Landscape in 2013, continued with iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook in 2014, but what band best documents this lonely day for 2015? Of course there are a ton of amazing albums out there to accompany a broken heart today (Bright Eyes' Fevers & Mirrors, the Mountain Goats' Get Lonely, Carissa's Weird's Songs About Leaving, etc.), but we need to continue the skramz tradition of melodrama and bleeding intensity. After much deliberation, New Jersey's You And I have won out for this year's lonely boy band.

You And I were a five-piece screamo/emo violence band from New Brunswick, New Jersey that were active from 1996 to 1999, and briefly reunited in 2011. The band's poetic lyrics, over-the-top vocals, as well as melodic sensibility proves that chaos is more than them. They were more in the realm of bands like Saetia, with constant loud/quiet dynamics, occassionally spoken vocals, and heavy guitars. Their songs would often explore numerous ideas, adding to the passionate intensity they played with, and when they hit a climax, the result is the equivalent of a group of guys crying on the floor with pictures of their ex. And that sound is sweet. And relevant to what most of you will be spent this day doing. Dismiss it as a meaningless holiday, but there's no denying it's a day to wallow in pity parties and exaggerated sorrow. It's as cheesy as how she liked her pizza. Enjoy.

Spraynard

Spraynard are a three-piece punk/indie/emo band from West Chester, Pennsylvania that formed in 2008, broke up in 2012, and reunited in 2014. These three young gents have knocked out some of the best jams this corner of the musical universe can offer. This is the soundtrack to small towns, skateboarding, and the summer, and the definition of "good vibes". Whether you're 15 or 30, Spraynard have got something to say. Funtitled is perfect from start to finish, get into it. If you like crunchy pop punk, such as Iron Chic, Latterman, or RVIVR, get into this band. I know I'm missing a few of their splits, but the majority of their discography is here, and the songs on the splits are compiled on The Mark Tom And Patrick Show. Enjoy.

Grown Ups

Grown Ups were a four-piece punk/emo band from Indiana that existed from 2008-2011. They only put out one full-length and two EP's, but have become one of the most renowned and influential bands in emo revival, and their distinct sound has been emmulated countless times. Grown Ups came about around the same time as Snowing, Algernon Cadwallader, and Merchant Ships, and the similarities are clear. High-energy, catchy songs, mixed in with some noodley guitar work, and passionately personal songs are the essentials here. However, Grown Ups featured a munch chunkier and punchy sound, which had more in common with early pop punk bands such as Lifetime. They also sound like they've been listening to a lot of Knapsack, early At The Drive-In, and Brand New, making them a unique band, to say the least. These guys are an incredibly and noteworthy band, and everyone has to give More Songs a listen, especially for songs like "Three Day Weekend". Also, Doyle Martin now plays in Cloakroom. Enjoy.

Joshua Fit For Battle

Joshua Fit For Battle were a hardcore/screamo band from Newark, Delaware, that existed from 1998-2003. They are now regarded as one of the most essential and influential bands to rise out of the late 90's/early 2000's underground hardcore/screamo scene, along with bands such as Orchid, pg.99, Funeral Diner, Neil Perry, and the Kodan Armada. Joshua Fit For Battle also had members with ties to a ton of other amazing bands, including Hot Cross and Welcome The Plague Year.

However, if there's one thing that can be said to differentiate Joshua Fit For Battle, it's that they were heavy. Really fucking heavy, and angry. Modern hardcore would be a lot better if most bands had half the passion that JFFB did. These songs are dark, spastic, and crushing in tone. They do have their quieter dynamic moments, but when they want to say something, every member is letting their instrument be ripped to shreds. There's a lot of dissonant chords, rolling drums, droning bass tones, and heavy palm-muting only broken up by octave spasms. One particular characteristic that really brings out the best in them is the vocals. There's a lot of "screamo" singers out there, but very few actually sound like their throat is bleeding like JFFB. Lyrically, they keep it short and direct, attacking modern politics, corporate business, technology, religion, and anything else they feel the need to call out. When I first heard them, their lyrics really stood out to me, because of how direct they were while still sounding so. fucking. sincere. It is very hard for a band to pull that off, just give "Fuck The Men In Her Life" (which is still one of the most intense songs I've ever heard) or "12 Years of Catholic Skool And This Is What I Learned" a listen and you'll see what I mean. This band was incredibly talented, passionate, and has solidified their place as an essential and influential band within their genre, and will continue to do so.

They only released one proper album in their time, To Bring Our Own End. This is an absolute classic, and would be the first thing I suggest you listen to. Their first three releases, all in 1999, were a self-titled 7", as well as splits with Love Lost But Not Forgotten and All I Ask. These were compiled on the release Bring Out Your Dead. I don't have the 7" or the All I Ask split, but those songs are on the compilation anyway, and Love Lost But Not Forgotten is an amazing band whose side of their split I suggest giving a listen to as well. Joshua Fit For Battle also put out a split with Flashbulb Memory, as well as the classic Neil Perry, both of which are included below. Sunny Day Real Estate

Sunny Day Real Estate are a four-piece indie/emo/post-hardcore band from Seattle, Washington. The band was formed in 1992 by guitarist/vocalist Dan Hoerner, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer William Goldsmith. This original version of Sunny Day Real Estate recorded a few demos and 7"'s, which are much more akin to the hardcore/grunge sound that existed at the time. The band's now-popular sound came together with the addition of Jeremy Enigk, who took over on lead vocal duties, plus added a rhythm guitar section, which left Hoerner to provide backing vocals and play lead guitar. It was with this line-up that the band's classic debut album Diary, was released. This album featured long, drawn-out grooves with intensive dynamics, melodic dual guitar work, and lyrics/vocals that were very passionate and poetic. This album is a classic within the "emo" genre, and has continued to be one of the most influential albums in emo and indie since its release.

The success of Diary brought the band to instant acclaim, which was backed by a vigorous touring schedule. The follow-up to Diary was recorded and released in 1995, just as the band had broken up for the first time. This new album is known by a few names, either Sunny Day Real Estate (since it is the only thing written on the cover), LP2 (which was Sub Pop's distribution name for it), or The Pink Album (because the cover was entirely pink). Although this new album didn't spawn the classics that Diary had like "Seven" or "In Circles", it is still held in high esteem, and is a solid album from front to back.

After the band's break-up, Enigk and Hoerner went their separate ways, but Mendel and Goldsmith joined a band that was just starting out. This little band was the Foo Fighters, formed by Dave Grohl just after Nirvana's demise. Sunny Day Real Estate reformed in 1997, with Enigk, Hoerner, and Goldsmith (who had just left the Foo Fighters), though Nate Mendel would continue on to be the Foo Fighters' bassist, even today. A new SDRE album was released in 1998, titled How It Feels To Be Something On. This was followed by 2000's The Rising Tide, which was their last full-length. These two albums are both solid in their own right, but didn't quite have the same impact as their first two albums. They broke up a year later, in 2001.

Sunny Day Real Estate wouldn't reunite until 2009, in which they returned to play Coachella in 2010, among other shows. They attempted to record an album as well, but no release came out of it. The band hasn't been active since 2013, though they did release a split with Circa Survive for 2014's Record Store Day, with their first new song since 2000.

This band is essential for everyone to hear, especially the first two albums. None of your favourite bands would exist if it weren't for Sunny Day Real Estate, so listen, enjoy, and marvel at the music this band has been able to make in their time.
