King Slender

King Slender a four-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that formed in 2016. Following a number of releases, their debut full-length finally came out in 2023. This is pretty fantastic stuff, with angular discordant guitars and lean octave chords pounded out with shimmers of melody cutting through the chaos. They've got a tangibly ripping energy and great production quality to boot as well. If you're a fan of bands inlcuding We Were Skeletons, The Saddest Landscape, or Portraits Of Past, this is definitely worth a listen. Enjoy.

Morning Dew

Morning Dew are a two-piece screamo/emo band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that formed in 2015. They've released two projects of raw, trebly, impassioned, and chaotically melodic skramz with fantastic dual vocals and self-effacing lyrics. Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start (they address it) were a five-piece emo/post-hardcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that were active from 1999 to 2008, with reunion shows occurring in 2013 and 2016. They released two full-lengths and a handful of EP's during their initial run. Sonically, they really were all over the place, so any description isn't going to do them any justice. It's a mesh of the angular, syncopated, mathy sound of Faraquet, the noodly arpeggios of Cap'n Jazz, and the melancholic indie anthems of Death Cab For Cutie. They pack a ton of variety into these relatively short songs, making both full-lengths incredibly engaging. Their final LP, the aptly titled Worst Band Name Ever is a little more subdued, so I do slightly prefer And Nothing Is #1, which is the suggested starting point. Even though they predate these bands, if you're into TWIABP, Cstvt, Everyone, Everywhere, Joie De Vivre, or Into It. Over It. (with Evan Weiss even being a member for a short period), I think this will appeal to you. Enjoy.

The Loved Ones

The Loved Ones are a five-piece punk band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that formed in 2003. The band was started by vocalist/guitarist Dave Hause, who was still a member of hardcore band Paint It Black at the time. He was joined by members of Kid Dyanmite and Trial By Fire. Unsurprisingly, they hit the ground running with a solid debut EP and fantastic LP via Fat Wreck Chords just a few years later. Keep Your Heart is an album I don't return to nearly as much as I should, as it's an incredibly solid collection of songs with pounding instrumentals and heartland lyricism. If you're into bands like The Bouncing Souls, Hot Water Music, or The Lawrence Arms, this will be right up your alley if you're already familiar with them. They dropped a second full-length and EP in the late 2000's, and have been relatively inactive since then. They still play sporadic shows, though its members have moved on to other projects. Hause in particular has been very active as a solo artist, alongside being a member of The All Brights and The Falcon in recent years. Enjoy.

Captain Jazz

Captain Jazz are a screamo/emo band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that have been active since late 2022 (as far as I can tell, at least). This year alone they've put out two albums, the latest one of which is particularly attention-grabbing due to the band name and artwork (scroll down, you'll see what I mean). It immediately peaked my curiosity when I came across it, and was pleasantly surprised to find a genuinely solid lo-fi screamo album with enough quirks to really set this record apart. For one, perhaps unsurprisingly the lyrics are incredibly meta, being very self-referential alongside pop culture nods and a borderline emo band roll call with the amount of nods and mentions on here. There is a slight chronically online sensibility to it (if that's even the right way to describe it). I understand that may not appeal to everyone, but I find the music itself to be earnest enough that it balances out. They're also not afraid to pull something completely different from the expected (though excellent) chaotic catharsis out, including ambient song closers, field recordings, and a straight-up rap complete with electronic beats. It's an interesting record to say the least, and one hell of a way to close out the year. I'm personally really into it, so I do suggest checking out. Enjoy.

Chemical Fix

Chemical Fix are a five-piece hardcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that formed in 2016. They put out their debut EP in 2018, which was followed up by a full-length back in 2021. Our Shade Casts Far consists of 9 tracks that the band rips through in 15 minutes, never ceasing their fast-paced, unrelenting delivery. the vocals in particular sound incredibly manic and desperate. If you're a fan of bands including American Nightmare, Carry On, or Dead Swans, this is not to be missed. with a few singles and one great Ink & Dagger cover from earlier this year, hopefully 2024 will see them back again with another full-length. Enjoy.

Get Fucked

Get Fucked were a short-lived five-piece hardcore/screamo project based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They only released one album, a self-titled record in 2004 via Level Plane Records. This project comprised of members from a ton of other notable bands, including Welcome The Plague Year, Neil Perry, Lickgoldensky, Tornado Of Knives, and more. Sonically, this is insanely noisy, dissonant hardcore played at an assaulting volume. It's a solid yet overlooked entry in the Level Plane roster, and is definitely worth giving a shot, particularly if you're a fan of Das Oath or pg.99, as a loose point of reference. Enjoy.

Cayetana

Cayetana were a three-piece indie/pop punk band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that formed in 2011 and have been on hiatus since 2019. They put out two full-lengths, three EP's, and a split with Camp Cope in their time together. This is one of many bands that have been criminally absent for being posted on here for years, so now is as good a time as any to share them. If you're not familiar with them, they played a lyrical and energetic brand of power pop, with prominent, melodic bass lines influenced by Joy Division and New Order and raw guitar chords, leaving the emphasis on some incredible songwriting. Enjoy.

Little Big League

Little Big League were a four-piece emo/indie band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that were around from 2011 to 2014, with two reunion shows in 2016. They released an EP, a split, and two full-lengths, the latter of which was released by Run For Cover. Admittedly, it is borderline criminal that it took this long to get this band on here, as they were one of the revival's finest, with some incredible songwriting and a great balance of melancholy and energy. The pulsating rhythm section was the backdrop to some clean, noodly arpeggiated leads and rhythm guitar chord washes, with breathy, expressive vocals. Fans of bands such as Football, etc., State Lines, Everyone Everywhere or Dowsing absolutely need to familiarize themselves with this band if you haven't done so already. And of course it has to be said, but the band's lead singer/guitarist was none other than Michelle Zauner, who is widely known now for a project that actually started as solo outing during her time in Little Big League. I'm of course referring to Japanese Breakfast, who have blown up in the indie stratosphere with wide popularity and much-deserved critical acclaim. Before all that though, her incredible talents lent themselves to this little band, which I highly recommend. Enjoy.

The Jazz June

The Jazz June are a four-piece emo/indie band from Kutztown, Pennsyvlania that formed in 1996. They went on an unofficial hiatus in 2003, played a one-off benefit reunion shows in 2007, and reformed again in 2013 for a new LP and tour. Despite not getting much attention during their initial run, they are now regarded as an emo classic, particularly with regards to their seminal full-length The Medicine. The Jazz June managed to themselves apart from the typical sounds of midwest emo and the emerging poppier "mall emo" sound that had begun to rise in popularlity near the end of their first tenure. They directly cite bands such as Cap'n Jazz, Christie Front Drive, Braid, Hoover and Kerosene 454 as influences, alongside jazz greats including Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, so the name isn't just a creative alliteration. This made for a truly unique approach to genre, integrating jazz and scales into their lead tinkering into their driving, melodic and melancholic sound. Their early material is much more rooted in the aforementioned band's influence, while they took a bit of an experimenal departure on Better Off Without Air. Post-reunion marked a strong return to form with After The Earthquake (released by Topshelf Records). Everything this band was great in its own way, but the essential listening here is undoubtedly The Medicine, and I'm also pretty partial to They Love Those Who Make The Music. It's incredible that this blog has been running for over 10 years with classics like these absent, so here they finally are. If you want a fantastic, detailed history on the band, check out this interview here. Enjoy.
