CityCop - Nesh REVIEW

Very few bands in recent history have carved out a truly unique niche like Akron, Ohio's CityCop have. Since their inception in 2010, they have blended together a plethora of sounds and genres to create something that is completely their own. After a slew of solid releases, they are finally back with the follow-up to 2017's fantastic The Same Stories That Never Get Old with the five-track EP Nesh, which is out today on the newly-formed Little Elephant Records.

The title track opens the record up, with a flurry of intricate yet flowing rhythms, with their distinct acoustic guitar seamlessly switching between smooth jazz chords, arpeggios and furious noodling. Their forlorn vocals carve out melodic passages for the first half of the song, the kind that are just begging to be shouted along to. They pull in the heavy punches in the latter half, with a ton of hard-hitting syncopation, screamed vocals, and this harrowing bass tone that solidifies the emotional gut-punch. The band's blend of post-hardcore, math rock and emo influences mesh together in this duality of unique complexity and subtle familiarity, which is exactly what makes them stand out so much, and why this opener is a killer introduction to what's to follow.

"Get Well" is a brilliant tension-builder, starting off on a crescendo before falling in to an instrumental where every member is firing on all cylinders. The tightness through these passages is immensely impressive, and the vocals recall the best of Anthony Green's performances. The heavy acoustic strumming is heavenly, creating a harmonious space amidst the emotionally-driven chaos. The third track, "Hindsight" acts as an instrumental guitar interlude. It relies just as much on the space between notes as the notes themselves to provide a nice break and perfect segue into the next half of the album.

"2020" opens up with the guitar work duelling between melody and dissonance, before the whole band kicks in. The drum work flows effortlessly while the bass knocks out heavy hits of syncopation, providing a sinister tone to the choir of backing vocals. Speaking of vocals, one of the best things about this band/album are the shouts that break up the singing into a near-scream, but always pulling back before exploding full-throttle. This track exemplifies that fantastically, where the vocals assist in the rise-and-fall tension the instrumental emits.

Finally, to close it out we have "Flatline". This track is initially deceiving, because it sets itself up as the poppiest song here, and then immediately curbs that expectation with the most violent vocal eruption and first instance of blast beats on this entire record. We get the heaviest and most cathartic outburst to close off the album, with those earworm melodic vocals in the midst of the song to balance out the mix.

Overall, this could be CityCop's finest work to date (and that is saying a lot). Picking standout tracks is near-impossible, but if I absolutely had to, I would say "Nesh" and "Flatline" floored me the most, but every track offers something different yet equally solid. They're a band who continue to impress with a plethora of influences coming together to create one sound that can only be referred to as "CityCop". Nesh is available today from Little Elephant Records. You can check out the video for the lead single "Nesh" below, as well as pick up the 7".

The New Amsterdams

The people have spoken, and it's clearly this band is what they want. I didn't have much of theirs, so thanks so much to Tim for supplying all of it. The New Amsterdams are a five-piece indie rock band from Lawrence, Kansas that formed in 2000. Originally, they were conceived as a side project by Matt Pryor (best known as the guitarist/vocalist of the legendary Get Up Kids), who wanted to explore more acoustic-based material. Since then The New Amsterdams have evolved into a full band, with Pryor still at the helm. Their early work features collaborations from other members of the Get Up Kids (notably Rob and Ryan Pope), though in recent years The New Amsterdams have solidified a line-up entirely of their own. The band isn't currently active, since The Get Up Kids are back together and Pryor's involvement in his now truly solo career.

There's not too much I comment on sonically, since admittedly I don't listen to this band a whole lot, but if you can imagine The Get Up Kids songwriting (with Pryor's unmistakably distinct voice) in a slowed down, acoustic-oriented atmosphere, this would be it. There's a ton of material to delve into here, and I'm super happy to finally deliver it. Never again will the requests be flooded with "The New Amsterdams". Enjoy.

Jon Kohen - Curse the Darkness, or Create a Light PREMIERE

Some of you may already be familiar with Jon Kohen's work. Whether it be with his band Kismet, or his solo material, both of which have been covered on this blog, his output is always astounding. Kohen is a Lowell, MA-based musician who's new EP, Curse the Darkness, or Create a Light today. Accompanying him is the a 13-piece string ensemble, featuring some members of the Lowell String Quartet, whose gargantuan bliss of somber orchestration contrast perfectly with Jon's whisper-thin vocals and guitar. If you're looking for some incredible, beautiful-sounding indie/acoustic music, this new EP is definitely a go-to for 2016.

I've done a quick track-by-track breakdown of the EP, but really just encourage you to give a listen yourself. It's a fantastic piece of work, in both an artistic and personally touching sense. It reminds me a lot of some of amazing artists, including Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, and Carissa's Wierd, who I can not say enough positive things about. Same goes for this EP, and all of Jon's work of course. He's been a long-time supporter of the blog, just as I've been a long-time fan of his work. Thus, I'd encourage you to give it a listen, not only for that but also because this is some truly fantastic music he's created, and it needs to be shared and heard, so please enjoy.

The first track here is "A Light", which begins as it's title would suggest, with a gentle, catchy melody backed by a fingerpicked guitar. It instantly resonates, and though the instruments and melodies sound bright, the vocals pack a looming or longing in them, giving off the shadow that all light inevitably produces, or something of the sort. The strings hang in the background until the song peaks in the middle, at which point they come in full-force, elegantly layering and building on each other. The song breathes for a moment to let Jon's melodies take over before ending in a loud, longing harmony of strings and vocals.

"Between The Bars" might sound familiar, and understandably so, since it's a cover of a classic Elliott Smith song. You can see Jon and the string section perform it below, and both the recorded and live versions are absolutely magnificent. First of all, Smith's music suits Jon's style perfectly, so the match is inevitably good. For this track, Jon manages to maintain the sober, haunting atmosphere that Elliott established, and lets the strings take the song to a new height. Whether it be the slight staccato at the beginning, or the long, flowing embellishes of the chorus, the strings really make a sad song soar.

"Dusk" closes the EP with a similar songwriting style as it began. It features quiet passages of fingerpicking for the  excellent lyrics and vocals to shine through, and then give way to this monumental wave of euphoria brought on by the quartet. The dynamic here is played perfectly, with the rise and fall played throughout until the musical (and emotional) crescendo at the end, which leaves the listener floored, and brings a perfect EP to a perfect end.

Andrew Thomson - Live At Apt. 2B

This past January, Drew Thomson played a set at Blacktop Records HQ in Tillsonburg, Ontario. It's a small town about 45 minutes outside of London, which is where his band, Single Mothers, originated. Though perhaps better known for his phenomenally raucous main project, he's developed a name for himself with his softer, acoustic-based material. The intimate, personal storytelling and self-reflections are put at the forefront, and this new tape is a perfect example of that. This new live set includes songs from prior tapes put out by Secret Voice and No Sleep, as well as a series of self-released EP's. What sets Live At Apt. 2B apart is the live setting, with the funny between-song banter, the crowd singing on "Bad Catholics", and the intimacy of the recording that makes it sound as though the listener is in the room.

Live At Apt. 2B will be available on April 16th, 2016 through iTunes and Spotify, in addition to Bandcamp. It's being pressed on cassette and limited to 100 copies on transparent green tint, so I highly suggest grabbing a copy as early as possible. I know I don't normally do promotions like this, but I am sincerely a massive fan of his work, and his other tapes are already permanent residents in my glovebox, and this one will definitely be joining them soon. Plus it's a chance to give an independent Ontario (where I'm from) label some support, so definitely give their entire roster a listen.

Wingnut Dishwashers Union

Wingnut Dishwashers Union was a folk-punk project started by Pat The Bunny in 2007 and disbanded in 2009. Pat The Bunny is a Brattleboro, Vermont-based (later on Tucson, Arizona) musician who known for his numerous projects, most notably Johnny Hobo & The Freight Trains, Ramshackle Glory, some solo stuff, and of course, Wingnut Dishwashers Union, among other projects he's been involved in but not the central member of.

This band in particular was formed just after his first major (and arguably most well-known) project Johnny Hobo & The Freight Trains. Though his first project featured numerous collaborators, Wingnut Dishwashers Union was a mostly solo effort, with occasional collaborations. Thus, most songs are just Pat's voice and acoustic guitar, or in other words, shouted words and slammed strings. His songs pretty much all revolve around being a burned out, strung out anarchist, but somehow still manage to be personable and relatable. Simply put, this is one of Pat's best projects, and the one that introduced me to him. I've meaning to upload some of his stuff for years at this point, so I'll make an effort to add more soon. Enjoy.

Alex G

Alex G (short for Alexander Giannascoli) is an indie/lo-fi singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that got started in 2010. He began posting self-recorded songs on Bandcamp, which is what began gaining him attention. In the past few years he's put out a slew of albums, and earlier this year he released his first major record, Beach Music, following the success of his last album, DSU. Alex G's sound is quite hard to pinpoint, though the Elliott Smith comparisons are a good place to start. The whisper-thin vocals, off-kilter chord voicings, intimate acoustic guitar, and sparse background instrumentation (drums, bass, the occasional keyboard) are the Matthew, Mark, Luke and John of Elliott Smith's first few records. All of these do seep into Alex G's music, thus the comparison, in addition to that very brittle, lo-fi atmosphere that's quite definitive of both artists.

Of course the songwriting, lyrics, vocals, etc. of Smith are superior, but it's no competition, and Alex G is certainly a worthy disciple. Not to say that the similarities are astounding, Alex G certainly has enough to experiment with in his own songs to make himself quite distinct. The similarity is just an easy jumping off point to get a rough idea of what he's all about. Regardless, enough rambling, I'm sure many of you know who Alex G is, since he's been one of the most requested bands I've ever had, so please do enjoy.

Drew Thomson

Andrew (or Drew) Thomson is a singer-songwriter from London, Ontario, Canada. He is best known as being the lead singer of punk/hardcore band/gang Single Mothers. And as we all know, Single Mothers are the greatest thing to happen in a long time, so of course this solo project would be just as good, and damn, it is. The Hold Steady is still influence #1 (especially songs like "Citrus"), which warrants 0 complaints. The songs have similar topics too: girls, drinking, drugs, getting out of London, all that fun stuff. Like Craig Finn before him, Drew pulls all this off with two things: honesty and sincerity. There is no frat boy front here, just an open and vulnerable depiction of someone's actual life. Not only is that commendable, but it can be relatable. It's hard to find any artist who is so open about themselves, both good and bad, and Drew is a master at this.

The songs on Honesty Is A Confidence Problem (put out by Secret Voice) are straight-forward and simple, with Drew bearing it all about himself and the people around him with only the backing of a folk/punk acoustic guitar. His self-titled (put out by No Sleep) features a lot more instrumentation, and the songs span out a little more. Both albums are astounding, and show different sides of his musical output, all the while featuring the same catharsis and lyrical content. The guy's got a great voice, and is a genius in terms of lyrics. I am a massive fan of both his band and his solo stuff. I don't think there are a ton of bands out there that I find myself not only relating to so much, but actually impact me enough to find some comfort in that relation. It's corny as hell to say, but his music has helped me out a lot, and hopefully the same can be said for you. Try and buy his music instead, but if not, enjoy.

CityCop

CityCop are a four-piece band from Ashtabula/Akron, Ohio, that formed in 2010. They are probably the most prominent (and maybe only) acoustic screamo band around. Yes, you read that right. Acoustic screamo. All the drum blasts and frantic guitars are still present, just done on an acoustic guitar instead. As you can imagine, it's a unique sound. The vocals are as one would expect from a modern screamo band, and CityCop find their sound fitting in with bands like The Saddest Landscape and Old Gray. However, CityCop certainly have some elements that differentiate them. For one, the vocals are sometimes sung, and sometimes spoken (in a Listener sort of way). The guitars also include some math rock-esque parts, often getting intricate in addition to melodic. In their short time, they've evolved a lot, and have become an incredibly solid and commendable force within their genre. Any fan of modern screamo or post-hardcore must have heard of them by now, since their name has been thrown around for so long, but only recently have they been getting a lot of attention very quickly, and for good reason. This is a band that I'm sure a ton of people who frequent this site would like, so do check them out. Enjoy.
