Ed Gein

Ed Gein was an American interior designer were a three-piece grindcore/hardcore band from Syracuse, New York that formed in 2001 before amicably breaking up in 2018. Its members reconvened shortly thereafter to form Shadow Snakes, a new project that veered away from the legacy of their former band. Sonically, Ed Gein were chaotic and discordant while remaining distincly rhythmic, with throat-shredding vocals and heavy, trebly riffs. Fans of bands such as The Number Twelve Looks Like You. Heavy Heavy Low Low, or As The Sun Sets will definitely find something to love here, even if those aren't exact comparisons. Despite their lengthy tenure, their release schedule was pretty sporadic. With only three-full lengths, two EP's and a demo, it doesn't take long to get through their entire discography. If you're looking for somewhere to start out, It's A Shame... is probably their most mathy/grindy, while Bad Luck is the closest they get to straight-up hardcore, so depending on your tastes either of those might interest you most, though Judas Goats & Dieseleaters is also a good option with less polarity. Trail Of Lies are a five-piece straight edge hardcore band from Syracuse, New York that began in 2011. They've made a name for themselves in hardcore thanks to some unrelentingly heavy, aggressive riffs that still have a groove to them, deep, guttural vocals, and a penchant for mosh-friendly breakdowns. There's definitely a lot of Hatebreed influence here, which is a selling point in and of itself. Both of their recent records, Strength Through Discipline and W.A.R. are worth checking out. I'm also missing most of the Demo (since I could only find the first two tracks). If anyone happens to have the rest, please send them my way! Enjoy.

Perfect Pussy

Perfect Pussy are a five-piece punk/noise band from Syracuse, New York, that formed in 2012. They got their start as a band by being formed to appear as a band in a movie, Adult World, and continued as a legitimate band following it. Their demo EP/demo came out a year later, and in 2014, their debut full-length, Say Yes To Love, was released. They've garnered a ton of attention and acclaim, and rightfully so. Along with bands such as White Lung, Fucked Up, Viet Cong, etc., they've been taking traditional "punk" and throwing their own spin on it, to preserve the energy while expanding on the genre. And they've certainly been noticed for it, thankfully.

They sound like a combination of Bikini Kill and Melt-Banana, with a tinge of Sonic Youth in the mix. However, you'd be hard-pressed to find an exact comparison to Perfect Pussy. Their shouted vocals are muffled by reverb and distortion. The bass and drums are what drive the songs, while the guitars swell in noise and chaos, which can sometimes be oddly melodic, partially due to the touch of keyboards. They keep it short, but burst with their utmost energy in each and every song, which demands to be blasted through headphones. I'm sure a lot of you have heard this band, but for anyone looking to get into them, I thoroughly mean it when I say, enjoy.

Polar Bear Club

Here's a band that's been requested a few times. I can't believe I haven't posted them on here earlier, actually. They could be one of my favourite modern bands, and have been for a long time now. They almost embody everything that the bands I post on here have, that's how awesome, representative, and diverse they are. I'm not sure why there's an introduction to this post, but it's certainly deserved, because Polar Bear Club are an amazing band.

Polar Bear Club are a five-piece post-hardcore/pop punk/indie band from Rochester/Syracuse, New York that formed in 2005. They signed to Bridge Nine in 2009. Since their inception, these guys have just been "killin' it". Everything they do is unbelievable. They're a powerful live band, an endless supply of mind-blowing recorded material, and super consistent in both. The band's sound is quite distinct. The vocals are harsh, but always carry strong melodies, and sometimes break into a more softly sung voice. The songs are super catchy, even with the melding of different instrumental bits. The band is certainly technically proficient, and often show it off, while remaining incredibly tight. They know how to play, how to write a song, and to fucking perform it. Their energy is unmatched. So check them out if you haven't, this is one band you don't want to miss out on.
