Penfold

Penfold were a four-piece emo/indie/post-hardcore band from North Jersey that formed somewhere between 1996 and 1997. Their sound is in the same vein as bands like The Promise Ring and Mineral, which are obvious staples for anyone interested in emo/indie in that era. Penfold's main active years came just after bands like that were at their peak, so in a way they sound like a culmination of what had been going on in emo throughout the 90's, and put it all together right around the turn of the century. Though Penfold never got the amount of attention the aforementioned bands did, they were arguably just as good and pumped out some classic songs such as "I'll Take You Everywhere" and "June". Though they're not genre-defining or revolutionary, they put out some amazing material in the time they were around. They broke up in 2003, though have played a handful of reunion shows throughout the years, so perhaps they're not completely done yet. Enjoy.

Drug Church

Drug Church are a five-piece hardcore/alternative rock band from Albany, New York that formed in 2011. They feature Patrick Kindlon of End Of A Year/Self Defense Family on vocals, and also share members with Push-Pit, as well as SDF. The band is currently signed to No Sleep Records. Hardcore plays a much more prominent role in their music than SDF, with chugging guitar parts with a sound big enough to recall bands such as Quicksand. Kindlon's spits words in his aggressive and dramatic voice, with a bit of a snarl added. Lyrically, they stay as socially aware and satirical as SDF, just with that hardcore/punk edge and bite emphasized. Overall, Drug Church are an incredibly solid band with numerous solid efforts already released, all of which are worth a listen. Thanks to Jacob Shumaker for the help with this one, and enjoy.

Free Throw

Free Throw are a five-piece emo/indie/punk band from Nashville, Tennessee that formed in 2012. These guys dropped their debut full-length album this year on Count Your Lucky Stars, and it is absolutely phenomenal. They can easily be compared to the plethora of modern twinkly/emo revival bands that seem to multiply by the daily. So when a band like Free Throw comes along, who fit into that niche, but simultaneously stand out so much in it, you know you're in for something good. They make masterful use of their vocals, which are often harmonised. They are also often very harsh, which is more akin to bands like Old Gray and Tiny Moving Parts, which is a nice contrast to their Snowing-esque instrumentation. They write insanely catchy songs, which sound very distinct from each other, and occasionally incorporate elements that lean on the border of sounding pop punk. If you're looking for new emo bands that aren't You Blew It! and friends, Free Throw are the exact band you need to be listening to.

Tiny Moving Parts

Tiny Moving Parts are a three-piece emo/screamo band from Moorhead, Minnesota which formed in 2008 when they were still in high school. The band consists of two brothers (bass/vocals and drums) and their cousin (guitar/vocals), I call that a fam jam (#cringeworthylilwaynejokes). Anyway, these guys blow me away. For a three-piece, their sound is so tight, and they have masterfully established themselves as one of the front runners in the modern emo/screamo scene, along with great bands such as Old Gray, Native, Grown Ups, and the Merchant Ships-related bands. The trade-off vocal parts, the bright and twinkly guitars, as well as the math rock-level technical bits of the bass and drums are some of the distinctive characteristics that comprise Tiny Moving Parts' sound. They are one of those bands that make you want to sing along and cry along to at the same time, you know? Basically one of the best kind of bands. The vocals can be super catchy, but with some emotionally hard-hitting lyrics relating to topics such as nostalgia. They just got signed to Triple Crown, and for a fucking good reason. Check out all of this stuff below, though the early things are from when they were in high school, so the quality of recording and such is questionable, but the later stuff is absolutely killer, both for the music and production value. Enjoy.
