Marschak

Marschak were a five-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Moscow, Russia that were active from approximately 2001 to 2009. They put out two albums, which vary fairly significantly in sound. Their self-titled is a raw and melancholic take on screamo, with desperately pained vocals, midtempo rhythms and washy guitar chords. Conversely, Relict is leaner and more technical, encroaching post-hardcore territory with its wiry, angular, syncopated guitars and shouted vocals, not to mention the inclusion of acoustic guitar segments. Both are solid releases, which one to start with is really based on your preferred cup of tea. I'm partial to the self-titled, if only for its bare viscera, but appreciate the experimental nature of Relict as well. Enjoy.

Smile To The Wind

Улыбайся Ветру (translates to "Smile To The Wind" are a four-piece screamo band from Saint Petersburg, Russia that formed in 2013. They recently released a new album, Illusions, which has set the bar for screamo this year. Sonically, they can be compared to bands like Loma Prieta and Louise Cyphre, since they play an incredibly crushing and chaotic style of screamo, complete with frenzied drums and dual guitars & dual vocals. There are some incredible instrumental passages here that break up the chaos, featuring gentle yet tense arpeggios and a looming atmosphere. The band throttles through a litany of sounds in an astoundingly short period of time. Illusions is a prime example of modern screamo at its finest, and I cannot recommend it enough. Plus, they put out some fantastic material before it to delve into after all 12 crushing minutes of Illusions. You can pick up the record from friends of the blog Zegema Beach, or one of the many fantastic labels listed below. Side note the links are for Mega because Zippyshare is giving me issues. Enjoy.

Pinkshinyultrablast

Pinkshinyultrablast are a five-piece shoegaze band from St. Petersburg, Russia that formed in 2007. I just found out they put an album out last year that I somehow completely missed, and have another new album coming out this month. This is mind-blowing since their debut EP is easily one of my favourite shoegaze releases in the past handful of years. I can't recommend it enough. It's got all the melody you'd expect, from the faint vocals to the clean, chorus and reverb-soaked guitars, and even all-out blasts of distortion to coat the shimmers of melody. All the obvious influences are in the mix, such as Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Lush, Ride, you know the names. Happy Songs For Happy Zombies isn't reinventing any wheels, but it's definitely got an amazing motion to it. I cannot recommend enough to any fan of shoegaze, especially those who think the genre begins and ends with Loveless and Souvlaki, and anything after the turn of the century is irrelevant. I'm incredibly excited to give the album a listen, and just wanted to quickly throw a post up about them, so enjoy.

Nostrils

Band submission. Nostrils (Ноздри in Russian) are a great punk/indie band from Ukraine. They put out one album before breaking up in 2011. With the new, leftover songs, one member (Nikita O.) decided to put them to use and recorded them for their second album. And I must say I'm quite glad he did. This is awesome! They cite their influences as being Hüsker Dü, The Wipers, Rites Of Spring, and Dinosaur Jr., so you know that they're worth your time. Really energetic, passionate, noisy, cathartic, but melodic, music. Check out both their albums on their Bandcamp, this is some really good stuff.
