Ruiner

Ruiner were a five-piece melodic hardcore band from Baltimore, Maryland that formed in 2004 and called it quits in 2010. They did reunite to play This Is Hardcore earlier this year though. Without a doubt these guys are one of my favourites from their era, which is saying a lot considering their peers were bands like Modern Life Is War and Verse. Ruiner played an intensely emotional form of hardcore, with very personal lyrics being shouted a top some pounding instrumentation, full of octave chords and the like. Their two full-lengths are stone-cold classics, as well as their one compilation, I Heard These Dudes Are Assholes, which includes all their early material. The only thing I'm missing here is their Under The Influence split with Attica! Attica! that includes a cover of Oasis' "Morning Glory", so if anyone happens to have it, please send it over. Landscapes

Landscapes are a five-piece melodic hardcore band from Somerset, England that formed in 2009. Their debut EP came out in 2010, and their full-length followed in 2012. A year later,  it was reissued by Pure Noise, who also released their second full-length just last month. Landscapes play a melodic and emotional brand of hardcore that could warrant comparisons to other UK bands such as More Than Life, Dead Swans, and Departures. Enjoy.

Daïtro

Daïtro were a five-piece screamo/hardcore band form Lyon, France that formed in 2000 and sadly broke up in 2012. Without a doubt, Daïtro are one of the most noteworthy and influential bands in screamo history. They were the flawless blend of melodic passages and chaotic outbursts, which of course is a staple dynamic in the genre. All three full-lengths offer up something slightly different, in addition to making masterpieces. Their splits are all with some amazing bands, such as Raein, Ampere, AND Sed Non Satiata. Daïtro are simply one of the best screamo/hardcore bands of the 2000's, and both recommended and essential. Enjoy.

Innards

Innards are a four-piece screamo band from Fort Worth, Texas that formed in 2010. In my opinion, they're one of the best screamo bands to come out in the past decade, with two incredible full-lengths and countless amazing splits under their belt. They play a highly cathartic, noisy, and technical style of music that features some bright, twangy, and noodly guitar parts, as well as some incredibly pained screaming that just flat-out sounds awesome. Any fan of screamo/emotional hardcore must have either heard of have to hear these guys, so enjoy.

Octaves

Octaves are a five-piece hardcore band from Baltimore, Maryland that formed in 2009. They were formerly signed to Topshelf, and are now on Bridge Nine. Octaves play an intense style of music, focusing on noisy aggression common to bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan. They're instrumentally proficient and certainly demonstrate that. Something of note is the vocals, which are sung in a spoken word style, but with a ton of gruffness. Imagine if Dan Smith (of Listener) fronted a hardcore band, Octaves are kind of what you'd get. Enjoy.

Yaphet Kotto

Yaphet Kotto were a screamo/emotional hardcore band from Santa Cruz, California that lasted from 1996 to 2005. They've gained an incredibly dedicated following, often being cited as being one of the greatest screamo bands ever. It's a deserving title. They managed to be emotionally cathartic while still presenting a sociopolitical agenda in their lyrics, which is always an impressive marriage. Not only do they have a lyrical duality, but the entire band's music is based on the concept. They, like any great band in their realm, are both melodic and chaotic, and the two blend seamlessly. They have two vocalists, one with a gruffer, hoarse, voice and the other mostly sung, though they both break into all-out screams at times.

The thing that probably gets noted most about this band is the unbelievable guitar work, with the two guitars entwining seamlessly, playing off each other while constructing some of hardcore's greatest riffs ever put to record. I don't think I need to ramble about what makes Yaphet Kotto so special, because it's a truth that's held to be self-evident. ...Who Calls So Loud were a screamo/emotional hardcore band from the Bay Area that were around from 2007 to 2008. They share members with a ton of other phenomenal bands, including Portraits Of Past, Funeral Diner, iwrotehaikus..., and Beau Navire. So naturally it's expected that ...Who Calls So Loud are at that same caliber. Their sole LP is amazing, featuring lengthy, post-rock influenced skramz sessions that burgeon without falter. It's a need-to-listen for people into Portraits Of Past and City of Caterpillar. Their EP is also solid, though not quite on par with the LP. Still worth the listen though. Enjoy.
