herlovebeheadsdaisies were a three-piece screamo band from San Antonio, Texas that formed in 2022 and disbanded in late 2023. I managed to miss their sole release (up until a recent split), which was their fantastic LP carving initials up until now. This thing is raw, anguished, and genuinely timeless, as it'd be very hard to place a release date on it if you just heard it. The arpeggios are moody and melancholic, with climatic explosions of chaotic fury. They're kind of like a lower-fi and skramz-ier I Hate Myself or The Spirit Of Versailles, though don't read too much into that comparison. It's a solid album for the saddest of hours, enjoy.

Suffix were a screamo band from Chicago, Illinois that were around between 2010 and 2011. I'm not sure if they started before or continued after that. They've got a really cool male-female vocal dynamic going on, with the two often alternating each line. Fans of modern "skramz" bands like Beau Navire and Innards will dig them. Their discography is incredibly limited, consisting pretty much only of one split and one EP. However, both are incredible and shouldn't be passed up. Also, members of Suffix went on to play in a bunch of other fantastic screamo bands, such as Itto, Lord Snow, and Coping. Enjoy.

The Discord Of A Forgotten Sketch (also written thediscordofaforgottensketch or TDOAFS) are a three-piece screamo/emo violence band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada that formed in 2001. Despite the fact that they've been around forever, their main activity has only been in the past few years, which is why they're often associated with bands such as Beau Navire. TDOAFS have got every aspect a great screamo needs absolutely nailed. They're dark, chaotic, but also painfully melodic, and have that slight hint of jazz influence nailed down. Throw in some elements of hardcore, and you've got a band that will remind you why you love screamo/skramz so damn much. Enjoy.

Circle Takes The Square

Circle Takes The Square are a screamo/post-hardcore/a mess of genres band from Savannah, Georgia that formed in 2000. They are the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Drew Speziale and vocalist/bassist Kathleen Stubelek, who have been the band's only two consistent members. Circle Takes The Square are a name often brought up when discussing the "classics" or "essentials" of screamo, alongside pg.99, Orchid, Jeromes Dream, etc. Although those phrases can certainly be applied to them, they are stylistically very different from any of their contemporaries.

Their entire reputation is basically built around one album, As The Roots Undo. This is for good reason, since it could be argued that this is the greatest screamo/post-hardcore album released. One word comes to mind when thinking of this album: frenzied. Their songs can hop from grinding, distorted guitars with blast beats behind them to jazzy interludes, to a piano part, to acoustic passages with sing-song melodies, right back to scream-fests. And these changes often come as fast as a finger snap. Though there still are those post-rock build-ups in parts, other times songs can change direction in an instant and be back to that original tangent just as fast. The band makes full use of every dynamic imaginable, whether it be very quiet and atmospheric, or blisteringly intense. "Experimental" is an understatement when it comes to this album. Perhaps the only semi-consistent aspect about this is the dual vocals of Drew and Kathleen, which often entwine with each other, sometimes sounding incredibly sinister and others quite melodic, but always blended together perfectly. Also, this is one of the few albums where every song, from start to finish, matters just as much as the others (maybe with the exception of "Intro"). Every song on here offers something new, but also gives the listener a perfect idea of what Circle Takes The Square is all about. This is an album by a band that knew what it meant to think forward, and who were out to create something different to what their contemporaries were doing. And that is the exact result they got, and it has yet to be forgotten, even over 10 years later.

Circle Takes The Square disappeared for many years post-As The Roots Undo, but never formally broke up. Rumours about a new album were constantly thrown around, but nothing came to light until 2011. An EP, Decompositions Vol. 1, Rites of Initiation, was released. This ended up being the first half of their official full-length, which would be released a year later. It was titled Decompositions: Volume Number One, and came 8 years after their last full-length. Despite all that time, Circle Takes The Square still does all that made them so great initially just as well. However, this is still a band that has matured exponentially. The youthful frenzy is much more subdued, and intelligible riffs with more formal song structures are definitely more prominent here. The metal influence definitely peels in more, with songs opting for a more mid-tempo pulse. Overall, this is the sensible follow-up, and an incredible album on its own, it just doesn't have the influential acclaim that their debut does.

Joshua Fit For Battle

Joshua Fit For Battle were a hardcore/screamo band from Newark, Delaware, that existed from 1998-2003. They are now regarded as one of the most essential and influential bands to rise out of the late 90's/early 2000's underground hardcore/screamo scene, along with bands such as Orchid, pg.99, Funeral Diner, Neil Perry, and the Kodan Armada. Joshua Fit For Battle also had members with ties to a ton of other amazing bands, including Hot Cross and Welcome The Plague Year.

However, if there's one thing that can be said to differentiate Joshua Fit For Battle, it's that they were heavy. Really fucking heavy, and angry. Modern hardcore would be a lot better if most bands had half the passion that JFFB did. These songs are dark, spastic, and crushing in tone. They do have their quieter dynamic moments, but when they want to say something, every member is letting their instrument be ripped to shreds. There's a lot of dissonant chords, rolling drums, droning bass tones, and heavy palm-muting only broken up by octave spasms. One particular characteristic that really brings out the best in them is the vocals. There's a lot of "screamo" singers out there, but very few actually sound like their throat is bleeding like JFFB. Lyrically, they keep it short and direct, attacking modern politics, corporate business, technology, religion, and anything else they feel the need to call out. When I first heard them, their lyrics really stood out to me, because of how direct they were while still sounding so. fucking. sincere. It is very hard for a band to pull that off, just give "Fuck The Men In Her Life" (which is still one of the most intense songs I've ever heard) or "12 Years of Catholic Skool And This Is What I Learned" a listen and you'll see what I mean. This band was incredibly talented, passionate, and has solidified their place as an essential and influential band within their genre, and will continue to do so.

They only released one proper album in their time, To Bring Our Own End. This is an absolute classic, and would be the first thing I suggest you listen to. Their first three releases, all in 1999, were a self-titled 7", as well as splits with Love Lost But Not Forgotten and All I Ask. These were compiled on the release Bring Out Your Dead. I don't have the 7" or the All I Ask split, but those songs are on the compilation anyway, and Love Lost But Not Forgotten is an amazing band whose side of their split I suggest giving a listen to as well. Joshua Fit For Battle also put out a split with Flashbulb Memory, as well as the classic Neil Perry, both of which are included below. So, it's everyone's favourite day of the year again. Since I did The Saddest Landscape last year, I had to come up with a band even more emotionally heartbroken and melodramatic. The answer: iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook, the definition of skramz and sad jams. They were a four-piece band from California. Their members were also involved in Punch, Beau Navire, and ...Who Calls So Loud, which should be an indication of how amazing this band is. They are easily one of the most noteworthy screamo bands of the 2000's, and created some pivotal music in their time. Plus their lyrics are just perfect, especially for people still waiting to meet someone in Montauk.

They put out a discography LP in 2010, with the first 12 tracks taken from their only LP, tracks 13-17 from a demo LP, tracks 18-25 from their first demo, and the 26th track as a bonus one. They never titled their songs, which is why they all have numbers for titles. Enjoy.

capacities are a four-piece screamo/hardcore band from New Jersey that began in 2012. Members of this band were also in The Saddest Landscape, You And I, Black Kites, and a bunch of other great bands. Regardless of their association with other amazing bands, capacities have certainly made a name for themselves. They play intense, chaotic, and emotional screamo with pummeling force. Lyrically, they explore many social/political/philosophical themes in addition to some personal ones. Seriously, check them out if you aren't already familiar with them. They're probably one of my favourite modern screamo bands around now, they're just too fucking good. Enjoy.

Lord Snow are a screamo/emo violence band from Chicago, Illinois that began in August 2011. Some members used to be in Suffix and Lautrec, among others. They play a style of chaotic, disjointed, ear-piercing, female-fronted screamo that I'm really into. This band are probably one of my personal favourite new bands in this genre, so definitely get into it if you haven't already.
