The Goalie's Anxiety At The Penalty Kick are a six-piece slowcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that began in 2018. I figured the best way to start off 2021 is with one of the best albums I just missed out on in 2020, which is their debut LP
Ways Of Hearing. This was released by Count Your Lucky Stars last October, and I cannot believe I spent the last two and half months oblivious to this. This sounds like Carissa's Wierd reincarnated, which are one of my favourite bands of all time. With the forlorn strings, gentle acoustic arpeggios, and barely muttered dual vocals, this all harkens back to the best of CW. Having said that, thanks to the finely crafted songs and instrumental variety, that connection comes off more as an influence than a direct replica. This is the kind of album that's meant to be listened to alone, in the dark, when its below freezing out. Enjoy.

What's with modern hardcore and emo bands having the worst band names? If it isn't a random female name, it's an overlong jumble like this. Slayer, easy to chant and stick in your mind. The Goalie's Anxiety At The Penalty Kick, not easy to chant, and...just why?

DeleteThat generalization misses so badly that you mustn't be asking in earnest...like, Slayer? Seriously? I am in my 30s and haven't listened to that shit since I was 16, thanks to the internet becoming a platform for distributing independent music that scratched the heavy/harsh/fast noise itch.
DeleteSmall handful of newer hardcore bands with simple names, whose aggression/harshness embarrass slayer: Stimulant, Friendship, Sea of Shit, Fluoride, Manhunt, Punch, Sect, aaaaaand Dangers.
enjoy!
That's nice, but my comment had little to do with if I still listen to Slayer. As a matter of fact, I do, because they do thrash right. Yes, bands are faster and heavier, but I don't listen to metal just for speed and heavyness, because I'm not 13. My point was about bad band names more than anything. Sea of Shit is good, but I'll take Slayer any day. They simply write better songs.
DeleteThank you very much for the excellent shares, as always. --especially appreciate the fresh slowcore.
ReplyDeleteAs a very great man once said 'an extremely useful album'
