Dreamwell

Dreamwell are a five-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Providence, Rhode Island that formed in 2016. I first heard this band when they released their sophomore album Modern Grostesque in 2021. Without a doubt that was one of my favourite screamo releases in recent years, as this band amalgamates such a wide variety of sounds into something so rich in detail, with cathartic performances and incredible lyricism with serious emotional depth to boot. The band blends the shimmering, ethereal guitars of post-rock with the hard-hitting rhythms and abrasion of a screamo act. They are one of the most vocally diverse bands in the genre, going through a wide variety of stylings that always fits the rise-and-fall dynamics of their songs, making each track feel essential and conducive to the whole. 

Now they are back with a new project, In My Saddest Dreams, I Am Beside You, which just came out via Prosethic Records. On just an initial listen, they have proven once again what makes them such a special and unique band, bringing the same melting pot of influence heard on previous albums and deliving into some new heavier, noisier, abrasive, and almost metalcore-y territory. It's going to be on regular rotation for the next, and if you have yet to hear this band, I implore you to do so. My poor and brief descriptions here are not doing them any justice, to be perfectly honest. This band is so far up this blog's alley is almost unbelieveable. I don't want to make comparisons here as Dreamwell truly do stand on your own, but if you're a fan of bands including Pianos Become The Teeth, Caravels, Gates, Funeral Diner, Suffocate For Fuck Sake, or Jeromes Dream, this might be the band of your dreams. Dropdead

Dropdead are a four-piece hardcore/powerviolence band from Providence, Rhode Island that began in 1991. They technically began in 1989 under the name Hellocaust, but after a few sound and line-up changes settled on the Dropdead we all know and love in 1991. Named after the Siege release we all know and love (see here), Dropdead were initially relentless in release after release of extreme punk rock, becoming a foundational aspect of powerviolence and hardcore as a whole. Their short songs, bursts of noisy aggression and vehement DIY ethics and politics defined the band in their most influential era.

Despite being one of the most notable names in powerviolence and hardcore, their discography remains a fucking nightmare to try and cobble together. They've put out multiple splits, multiple recordings of the same songs, and numerous releases all inexplicably left as self-titled, no matter the years and track listing differences that span between them. Having said that, with the most recent release of a new LP (their first official full-length since 1998), their Bandcamp has made it much easier to access all their material. They released compilations that contain their early material, and long-spanning "mid" material, right up until the modern era and release of Dropdead 2020, their most recent album. The name sounds like an update on their old sound, when in reality is just a stark reminder of the messages they've been espousing since the early 90's, and keeps in line with the tried-and-true sound that they both defined and continue to perfect, reminding us why there is no other band quite like the one, the only, Dropdead. I didn't include the new Bandcamp/streaming releases, inside put together as many individual releases as I could for this to include both sides of splits, individual artwork and track listings, etc. If you want to make your life a little easier though, their Bandcamp or any major streaming service is the place to be. As The Sun Sets

As The Sun Sets were a four-piece grindcore/metalcore band from Providence, Rhode Island that began in 1998 and ended in 2002. Though they were only around a relatively short while, they did manage to put out two full-lengths, an EP, and a live EP. This band is of particular note because 3 of its members went on to form Daughters right after the dissolution of As The Sun Sets. The chaotic, noisy experimental approach to hardcore present in the first two Daughters' albums is definitely hinted at in ATSS later material. Having said that, they still have a more straight forward grind/metal approach in comparison to the off-the-wall nature of Canada Songs. They put a solid slew of material that's worth checking out, regardless of what its members went on to do after. Enjoy.

Fucking Invincible are a five-piece hardcore/powerviolence band from Providence, Rhode Island that got started in 2012. Since then, they've pounded out release after release of dirty, distorted, and heart-pummelling hardcore with a clear powerviolence influence and a slight hint of grindcore. This band also shares members with Daughters and Dropdead, which should be a clear indication as to why Fucking Invincible are fucking incredible.
