The Power & The Glory

The Power & The Glory were a four-piece metalcore band from Atlanta, Georgia. They began around 1996 as a five-piece under the name Downpour, and put out two releases. Admittedly, they're just alright. In the early 2000's and changed their name to The Power & The Glory. This is where things get really good. Under this moniker, they released one album. Call Me Armageddon. It came out in 2004 as a Deathwish release, and was produced by Kurt Ballou with artwork done by Jacob Bannon. This album is absolutely fantastic, and recalls the technical riffs and hard-hitting impact of bands such as Converge, with elements of crust punk and grindcore mixed in. Highly recommended and underrated, enjoy.

Rise And Fall

Rise And Fall were a four-piece hardcore band from Ghent, Belgium that began in 2002 and have been inactive since 2012. They put out four full-lengths in their time, three of which were through Deathwish Inc. Additionally, they put out a split (below as bonus tracks on Hellmouth), an EP and a live album (which was from their 2012 record release show). They also put out a demo which I unfortunately do not have. Sonically, they took influence from metallic hardcore and crust punk, and would appeal to fans of bands such as Trap Them, Tragedy, Integrity, and Converge. With their four flawless albums, they are one of most consistent and essential hardcore acts to come out in the past 20 years or so, and I cannot recommend them enough. Enjoy.

Greet Death

Greet Death are a three-piece shoegaze band from Flint, Michigan that began in 2011 under the name Pines. To date they've released an EP and two LP's, the most recent of which was released on Deathwish today. Sonically, they make constant use of ethereal reverb, droning chords, that come together in crushing, distorted climaxes that ascend incredible heights when played past max volume. Their songwriting ability is also noteworthy, with the vocals often taking the forefront in ways slightly unexpected from the genre. Fans of bands like Cloakroom, Nothing, Thunder Dreamer, Ovlov and Hum will take particular interest in here, especially considering some of the slowcore and alternative rock influences thrown into the mix. Their debut LP is a solid outing, with stand-out tracks including "Black Hole Jesus Christ" and "Cumbersome". Their most recent album, New Hell is an incredible outing that shows the band coming into their own with a unique style and interpretation of their influences. Each new song offers up a different idea, with standout track being "Strange Days" (it'll take a few more listens to determine more, but so far it's fantastic from start to end). Enjoy.

Frail Body

Frail Body are a three-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Rockford, Illinois that formed in 2017. They play an incredible style of screamo that incorporates heavily distorted guitar chords and melodic lead lines, distorted bass riffs, heavily rhythmic drumming, and some visceral vocals. Plus, the production work is absolutely fantastic. Fans of bands like State Faults will fall in love with this. They've put out two EP's thus far, both of which are incredible and worth checking out. This band will undoubtedly be one to watch out for, and have already gotten a superb start. Enjoy.

Life Long Tragedy

Life Long Tragedy were a melodic hardcore band from San Francisco, California that formed in 2001 and broke up in 2008. They were contemporaries to a ton of other incredible bands within the same corner of hardcore, such as Modern Life Is War, Ruiner, Killing The Dream, Sinking Ships, and many, many more. Fans of the impassioned, visceral, emotionally vulnerable and melodically coherent will undoubtedly dig this. They put out their last record through Deathwish, which is not surprising considering how many of the other great melodic hardcore bands of their decade also worked with them. Burn

Burn are a four-piece hardcore band from New York that formed in 1989. This band's got a pretty intriguing history, especially considering their debut full-length is only now coming out (in 2017). Burn went through a handful of members in its nearly 30-year on-and-off run as a band, some of which were involved in other notable projects such as Quicksand, Glassjaw, Inside Out, 108, and Orange 9mm.

During their initial run, which lasted from 1989 to approximately 1992, the band only released one EP, a self-titled one on Revelation Records. Though it is a classic NYHC release, this is all the band would ever put out in their first era. A decade later, the band reformed in 2001. They released the long-awaited follow-up EP to Burn, as well as another EP the following year containing demos recorded in 1992. Now there EP's and over ten years into their time as a band, another decade would pass until the next EP dropped, which yielded 2016's aptly-titled From The Ashes, on Bridge 9. Now, in September 2017, Burn's debut full-length album is out, Do or Die, on Deathwish Records. This is a fantastic listen and some of my most highly recommended hardcore albums to drop this year. The Carrier

The Carrier were a melodic hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2006 and broke up in 2012. Their brand of hardcore focused on passionate, emotionally driven vocals and lyrics backed by some hard-hitting instrumentals that could be as melodic as they were crushing. The Carrier were contemporaries with other great bands like Killing The Dream, Ruiner, and Dead Swans, who all have some stylistic similarities. They released the majority of their material on Deathwish, including what I think is an absolutely flawless EP, No Love Can Save Me. They put out two full-lengths, one in 2007 (that was later re-released by Deathwish in 2010), and another in 2011, titled Blind To What Is Right, which would sadly be their swan song. Early in their career they released a demo and a self-titled EP, which I don't have, but all the songs appear on their debut One Year Later. Enjoy.

Death Index

Death Index are a two-piece post-punk band that were formed in 2015 by Carson Cox, who is best known as being a member of Tampa band Merchandise. Death Index take a much more noisy and abrasive approach compared to Cox's main project, though some of Merchandise's earliest work does have some sonic similarities. Death Index just put out their debut full-length on Deathwish, and it's definitely a worthy addition to an already amazing roster. The LP is defined by a dark atmosphere with some sharp guitar tones and drums covered in so much reverb that they almost sound tribal. They knock out 10 great songs in under 25 minutes, so it's definitely a fast-paced listen that's certainly worth your time. Enjoy.

Cult Leader

Cult Leader are a four-piece hardcore/crust band from Salt Lake City, Utah that formed in 2013. They got started by 3/4 members of Gaza, who had just broken up in 2013 (I'll do a post on them one day, they're unbelievably good). Just like Gaza before them, Cult Leader are putting out some of the most intense and aggressive music of their time. Their debut LP, Lightless Walks is one of my personal favourite hardcore albums of the year, as it is for many people I would imagine. They've got a very dark and sludgy tone going on, but still play at breakneck speeds, and are spearheaded by some insane guttural vocals. They're 3 parts angry and 1 part depressive, which is the perfect mix for an aggressive band. On their LP, they break up the beatdown sessions to give way for some slower, moodier songs, which sound incredibly haunting and unsettling. These are some of the highlights of the album, since it shows they have more to offer than the blistering speeds so many other bands purely rely on. Cult Leader stay just as ferocious and intense when they slow things down, kind of like an animal about to attack its prey. Sometimes the anticipation is more gruesome than the attack. Or something like that. Enjoy.
