Expert Timing

Expert Timing are a three-piece emo pop band from Orlando, Florida that began in 2016. They're a relatively new addition to CYLS with the release of their EP Whichever, Whatever last year, and were pretty prolific up until then. The band have made life easy with the self-assigned "bubblegrunge power pop", which really encapsulates their sound. They bring high energy, dual vocals, earworm choruses, and bright chords with the occasional blast of distorted guitars to each song, making for some unforgettable tracks. Fans of Weezer, The Format, Dowsing, and Camp Cope should check this band out, though those are some pretty loose comparisons. Enjoy.

Donor were a five-piece emo/indie/punk band from Orlando, Florida that began in 2013. They were a project created by members of Dikembe, You Blew It!, You'll Live, and Crucial Dudes, all fantastic bands in their own right. They came together for one four-track EP, which was released in 2013. They haven't shown any signs of activity since 2015, so it's safe to say this is the one and only we will get. It's a solid release, and sort of what you'd get when a midwest emo band kicks on the overdrive for a pop punk tinge. Enjoy.

Kite Flying Society

"Please let me keep this memory. Just this one."

Year 6 of this lonely and despaired tradition. Another screamo soundtrack to wallow in. Valentrine's Day 2018, a day of romance and lovers. Not that you'd know anything about that. Thus you are left to scourge every sorrowful moment, every lonely Sunday morning, every pain in your half-burnt heart, and every reminder of when things were better. Might as well listen to some decent tunes while you do it. This year we've got the fantastic Kite Flying Society to do so, and I'll leave links to all previous years in the comments if you want to deepen the wound.

Kite Flying Society were a five-piece screamo band from Orlando, Florida that were around from at least 2000 to 2002 (any more info would be appreciated). They played an impassioned style of screamo akin to bands such as Saetia or You And I. In their chaos and dissonance, there are definite signs of melody here, albeit brief ones. Vocally, they are absolutely scorching, but also made heavy use of spoken word bits, which harken back to Moss Icon in the fragmented delivery atop arpeggiated guitars. Their discography, like many of their contemporaries, is fairly scattered. They released 2 EP's in their lifetime, and recorded a handful of other tracks that were never released. That is, until their full discography was compiled in 2006 by Init Records. Their discography is below, which includes all their EP material, some unreleased/demo tracks, as well as some live stuff. Doesn't get much better than this on days like today. All apologies and smiles, yours truly, ugly Valentine. Enjoy.

Carlisle

Carlisle were a five-piece screamo band from Orlando, Florida that were initially around from 1996-1999 (approximately, not 100% sure on that). They played an intense yet oddly catchy and melodic style of screamo that is truly unique to them. Pop punk-influenced screamo doesn't really seem like a good description, but I can't think of any other way to explain it. Just listen. During their initial existence, they only released two 7"'s and put out a handful of songs on various compilations. In 2006, a full discography album was released, containing 8 newly recorded songs by the band, in addition to all their previously released material and a handful of demo tracks. Enjoy.

Forever Beautiful: A Collection Of Love For Orlando

"This compilation is a love letter to the community of Orlando, FL. Following the tragic events at Pulse Nightclub on June 12th, we wanted to show our support and love for our LGBT community the best way we knew how; through music. The tracks on this album were all individually contributed by the bands and artists themselves; artists from Orlando, New York, California, England, and all over the globe. All proceeds from this compilation will be donated to support the victims of the Pulse shooting as part of the OneOrlando Fund (www.oneorlando.org) as a symbol of solidarity as our city rebuilds."


I had to share this, because it's for an amazing cause and it features a TON of bands that are already on this blog and I know a ton of people love. Some tracks are exclusive to this compilation (b-sides and demos and such), plus all the proceeds go to the aforementioned fund, so there is no question that this comp is worth every dollar you can spare to donate. You Blew It!

You Blew It! is a five-piece band from Orlando, Florida, though they play emo/indie as if they were from the Midwest, Cap'n Jazz/American Football-style. Modern bands like Algernon Cadwallader, Joie De Vivre, Dikembe, Dowsing, etc. could work as comparisons as well, I guess. Very clean, noodly guitar parts decorate each song, which occasionally turn into slightly overdriven, full, ringing chords or octaves. The vocals are another great point with this band. They're usually really catchy, but with the perfect amount of melancholy thrown in. They can get fairly strained and off-key at times (in a good, gruff way), but can also turn quiet and melodic, which is a dynamic they often employ to their benefit. They're currently signed to Topshelf Records. That's it, I guess. These guys are a fucking awesome band, and personally one of my favourites in this niche of music, so check them out. Enjoy.
