Moving Mountains

Moving Mountains are a four-piece post-rock/indie/post-hardcore band from Purchase, New York. They started out as a two-piece project involving singer/guitarist/songwriter Gregory Dunn and drummer Nicholas Pizzolato. They recorded one album, Pneuma, together. It was monumentally impressive, especially considering it was written, performed, and produced by two people who weren't even 20 yet. After it got major positive reception, they added two more members to round off a full line-up and tour with. Their second album Waves came out of this, which garnered them even more attention. Two years after it, their self-titled album came out, and they went on hiatus, which has continued indefinitely.

The band is often compared to The Appleseed Cast, and it's obvious why. Both bands incorporate tons of post-rock elements, from their crescendos to their guitar sounds and effects. Their songs are epics in proportion, with emotionally strained climaxes and melodic quiet sections, in additions to numerous ambient volume swells. Moving Mountains also have some aggressive and complex moments, especially on Waves. They use heavier guitars and more technical riff-oriented parts,  along with some occasionally screamed vocals. This shows their more post-hardcore influenced side. Their self-titled is much more relaxed, using lots of acoustic guitars and slower song caked in reverb. Pneuma is golden. Everything from post-hardcore riffs to ambient tracks to acoustic singer-songwriter tracks; long songs, short songs, everything is on it. And they manage to tie it all together thematically, soundwise, and they managed to create a cohesive work of art from beginning to end. They have two EP's, Foreword, which is very post-rock exclusive, and New Light, which is more acoustic-oriented. Below is their three full-lengths and two EP's. Enjoy!

Cursed

Cursed were a four-piece hardcore band from Toronto, Ontario from 2001-2008. Without a doubt, these guys have made one of the biggest impacts in hardcore music from the last decade or so. They put out some incredibly dark, sludgy, and heavy music that has continued to be a huge influence on bands. They were fronted by Chris Colohan, whose political lyricism and morbid imagery made them stand out as a band willing to press legitimate social issues with actual knowledge to back them, and done in ways that can still be seen as artistic. His vocals are low, seething, guttural, and throat-scorching, which perfectly works with their sludge metal-influenced guitar tones and pounding drums. If the apocalypse had a soundtrack, this would be it. If the decline of western civilization has a soundtrack, and this is it, despite not being a band for more than five years.

They formed out of the remnants of another band, The Swarm, in 2001. Most of their members had also been very active in a ton of bands that dominated the Canadian hardcore/punk scene. Cursed's debut album, I, came out on Deathwish in 2003. They pummelled through two more LP's and two EP's before calling it quits in 2008. They were robbed while staying in a German squat, and lost everything; gear, money, and passports were all gone. Since then their members have stayed quite active in a ton of bands, such as Burning Love, Quest For Fire, and Crux of Aux.

Below is their entire discography. Their demo, Hell Comes Home 7", unreleased song from I, Blackout At Sunrise 7", and Last Session 7" were all complied onto an album called The Rest, which contains everything they did not included on an LP. Their three EP's, Hell Comes HomesBlackout At Sunrise, and The Last Session are also individually included, if you want the artwork for them. The demo and outtake song are the only things included on the compilation I couldn't find anywhere else. Enjoy.

State Champs

State Champs is a pop punk quintet from Albany, New York, formed in 2010 and currently signed to Pure Noise Records. These guys are definitely one of the best new pop punk bands right now. They're full of energy, catchy riffs and choruses, and they just make you feel good in general. Definitely download their debut LP The Finer Things and their EP Apparently, I'm Nothing. You won't regret it.
They were just on the 2014 Vans Warped Tour, and you can catch them this fall on the Pure Noise Tour.

City Of Caterpillar

City Of Caterpillar were a four-piece screamo band from Richmond, Virginia, that existed from 2000-2003. They were a side project of pg.99, featuring many of the same members. Although City Of Caterpillar didn't have quite the life of pg.99, their influence is quite close. City Of Caterpillar are best known for taking the traditional sounds of screamo/emo and creating masterpieces out of them. Their songs went beyond the minute-and-a-half rule of their contemporaries as they broke into 9-minute territory on occasion. Their songs were crafted to be epics, and epics they were. They could break into an intensive frenzy just as well as any hardcore band out there, but could also become much more subdued and melodic, showing off the band's technical skill and sense of melody. They knew how to delicately build this up, and took their time to peak even higher. The crescendo/climax formula is often employed by pretty much every post-rock band ever, thus why City Of Caterpillar are often referred to as being a post-rock band, though they are closer to Slint than Explosions In The Sky.

Overall, City Of Caterpillar are an essential band for anyone into screamo or the pg.99 family. They share members with pg.99 (obviously), Darkest Hour, Majority Rule, Malady, and Pygmy Lush. Their sole LP, which is self-titled, is probably in my top ten favourite screamo albums ever. I hadn't listened to it in a while, and just gave it a spin, and wow, that thing holds up well. It sounds just as intense as it always has, and still doesn't feel dated whatsoever. This is band with a legacy here to stay, so enjoy.

Portraits Of Past

Portraits Of Past were a five-piece post-hardcore/screamo band that came and went from 1994-1995, but reunited from 2008-2010. They were from San Francisco, California. Despite their very brief existence, this band has become a staple in any discussion surrounding their respective genres. They, along with many of their contemporaries on Ebullition and Gravity Records, helped define a sound in which the influence of is still felt today. One can't help but listen modern bands like We Were Skeletons, The Saddest Landscape etc. and hear the Portraits Of Past worship. What made this band so distinct were its undeniable talents. Their vocals were shrieked, and most of all, desperate. Screaming lines such as "there's a few truths, and here's just one: I'm as fucked up, about as much as you are fucked up" gives me chills every time. The guitar work is unbelievable. The guitars lace together with trebly, melodic tones to construct melodies, while making full use of octave chords and occasionally harmonics. The guitars are sharp and play tightly together, which was briefly introduced by Drive Like Jehu years before and would continue to be employed by bands like Q And Not U and Hot Cross later on. The bass and drums created such a tight rhythm section. The bass tone rumbles low, and the drums get technical without losing focus. The songs that they constructed were often lengthier and more complex than their contemporaries. They built songs up, let them peak, and let them come down. This is similar to the soft/loud/soft dynamic that Indian Summer employed, but Portraits Of Past stepped it up a notch. They would do it more than once in songs, going from chaotic frenzies to quiet, melodic patterns, and back again without warning. Their music was incredibly impressive and diverse for the time, thus why they are easily one of the best bands in their genre.

Their initial existence was brief, and all they put out was a demo, a split, and two compilation songs while they were together. A year after their breakup, their only album, 01010101, came out. Fast forward to 2008, and they reunited to play numerous shows, which extended from 2008 to 2009. They were also playing new songs at this time, which eventually became a new EP in 2009, Cypress Dust Witch. Following the release of that EP though, they've been inactive. Enjoy.

Heroin

Heroin were a four-piece hardcore/screamo band from San Diego, California during 1989-1993. Here's a band that predicted "The Shape of Punk To Come" years before that phrase even came into existence. Heroin kind of bridged the gap between the melodic punk sound coming out of DC/Maryland in the late 80's (Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Dag Nasty, Moss Icon, etc.) and the post-hardcore/screamo bands that would dominate the California/San Diego scene in the 90's (Antioch Arrow, Portraits Of Past, Angel Hair, Indian Summer, etc.) Heroin take the basic "emotional hardcore" essentials (the fast pace, personal lyricism, intense music) and push the levels on those in a darker direction to pave the way for what bands after would do. They were vicious, cathartic, and broke down what might have been melodic songs initially into all-out emotional torture fests. From the first few seconds of "Head Cold", they pulsate with a ferocity that's been caged up too long.

When I first heard them, I thought they were around in the later 90's, because the year their discography album was released was 1997. Even for that era this was exceptional stuff, but when I found out these recordings were from 1991, and 1993 at the latest, I was blown away. They are incredibly underrated, and even Geoff Rickly, the figurehead of post-hardcore for the last 10 years, cites them as a major influence. They were the first band to put out a 7" on Gravity Records, which is another sign of what that label and that sound would carry on to do. Their members also went on to other major projects, such as Antioch Arrow and Battalion Of Saints. Heroin's first 7" was called All About Heroin, and it came out in 1991. They put out another 7" in 1992, which was self-titled, and a 12" in 1993, which was also self-titled. Posthumously, a discography album was released in 1997, which compiled all their material. That is what's posted below, and I definitely suggest giving this a listen, since it is a staple classic in post-hardcore/screamo. Enjoy.

Into It. Over It.

Well, here it is. This is easily the most requested band on here ever, and for good reason too. They have a very expansive discography which is near impossible to fully complete, but here's a very close selection of it. The only things I know of that are missing are two cassette releases (Chicago and Covers respectively), the second Daytrotter session, and their contribution to the Polyvinyl 4-track singles series. Thanks to everyone who helped find all of those. Everything else appears somewhere below. So if anyone has those things, please send them to me. Also, thanks to Jacob Shumaker for the help with this. Enjoy.

Into It. Over It. (IIOI) is mainly the project of Evan Thomas Weiss. Evan's origins are split between Chicago, Illinois, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Prior to IIOI, he was a longtime member of The Progress, a band that he had started while still in high school. For a brief time he was also the bassist of Damiera. After The Progress broke up, Into It. Over It. was slowly formed. Starting in September 2007, Evan wrote and recorded a song every week until September 2008. This spawned 52 songs, which would appropriately become 52 Weeks, the first album released under the Into It. Over It. moniker. Each song was entirely performed and recorded by Evan himself. Some of his best material came out of this ("Anchor", "Batsto", "Pinky Swear", "High & Mighty", "Bullied Becomes The Bully",  "22 Syllables", etc.) and the most impressive part being that each song was constructed within the span of one week. Following this, he released a slew of splits with many great bands. His songs on those splits would later compile Twelve Towns. Into It. Over It.'s debut album, Proper, was released in 2011 on No Sleep Records. This is their first release with a true full-band lineup. With a few smaller releases in between, their second full-length, Intersections, came out in 2013 on Triple Crown Records. In addition to IIOI, Evan is also a member of Stay Ahead Of The Weather, Their / They're / There, and Pet Symmetry.

Into It. Over It.'s sound is basically an amalgamation of emo and indie rock with some singer-songwriter sensibilities. Some bands that they obviously draw influence from are Death Cab For Cutie, Braid, The Get Up Kids, and Owen. Their earlier material was more focused on Evan solely. Though a lot of early songs were recorded with drums, electric guitars, etc., his tours were mainly just him and an acoustic guitar, as were many of the early songs. As their career progressed, they shifted to a permanent full band dynamic. They are often heralded as being one of the front runners of the modern emo revival scene, and it's obvious why. They often tour and associate with bands within that realm of music (Empire! Empire!, You Blew It!, Foxing, etc.), but also go beyond the obvious contemporaries. They have played shows or released music with bands as diverse as Frank Turner, The Wonder Years, Former Thieves, Bomb The Music Industry!, and Such Gold. Overall they are an amazing, well-rounded band that everything should definitely give a try, as many of you obviously do. The essentials are 52 Weeks, IIOI/KOJI, Twelve TownsProper, and Intersections.
