Polar Bear Club

Here's a band that's been requested a few times. I can't believe I haven't posted them on here earlier, actually. They could be one of my favourite modern bands, and have been for a long time now. They almost embody everything that the bands I post on here have, that's how awesome, representative, and diverse they are. I'm not sure why there's an introduction to this post, but it's certainly deserved, because Polar Bear Club are an amazing band.

Polar Bear Club are a five-piece post-hardcore/pop punk/indie band from Rochester/Syracuse, New York that formed in 2005. They signed to Bridge Nine in 2009. Since their inception, these guys have just been "killin' it". Everything they do is unbelievable. They're a powerful live band, an endless supply of mind-blowing recorded material, and super consistent in both. The band's sound is quite distinct. The vocals are harsh, but always carry strong melodies, and sometimes break into a more softly sung voice. The songs are super catchy, even with the melding of different instrumental bits. The band is certainly technically proficient, and often show it off, while remaining incredibly tight. They know how to play, how to write a song, and to fucking perform it. Their energy is unmatched. So check them out if you haven't, this is one band you don't want to miss out on.

Victor! Fix The Sun

Victor! Fix The Sun was a three-piece post-hardcore/screamo band from Michigan that existed from 2003-2011. They took heavy influence from the DC greats such as Q And Not U, Fugazi, etc. I think this band is pretty underrated, since they put out some amazing material, but have never really gotten a ton of recognition for it. So definitely check them out, and spread the word. Their members now play in Jowls, another great band, and Blank States. We is a split with Tanooki Suit, but I only have Victor! Fix The Sun's side. Enjoy.

Funeral Diner

Funeral Diner were a a legendary screamo band from Half Moon Bay, California that existed from 1998-2007. These guys were incredibly active during their time as a band, with constant releases being put out on and an endless touring schedule. They've also proven to be one of the most influential bands in their genre. They're one of the few bands that really manage to embody every aspect of screamo in their music. They can be chaotic, melodic, emotionally passionate and intense, dark, crushing, dynamic, and hinted at post-rock influences to create songs of epic proportion. The band included former members of Portraits Of Past and Takura among others, and featured members that would later go on to be a part of ...Who Calls So Loud, Stirling Says, Lemonade, and others. In my opinion, they are probably a first-tier essential screamo band, along with Orchid, Saetia, pg.99, etc., so definitely be sure to get into Funeral Diner if you haven't already. Enjoy.

father figure

father figure are a three-piece screamo/emo band from Denton, Texas that formed in 2011 and unfortunately broke up in 2013. The band features members of Innards and Two Knights, and basically sounds like an amalgamation of the two. These guys are great. They aren't groundbreaking or anything, they just have a fucking great sound that they pull off flawlessly, and I'd go as far as to say that they're one of my personal favourite modern screamo bands. I love the lyrics, as overdramatic as they are, and their delivery, as overdramatic as it is. But that's kind of what makes them so awesome. Enjoy.

Blacklisted

Blacklisted are a hardcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that formed in 2003. They've been one of the most prominent (and in my opinion, best) bands to emerge from the hardcore in the past decade or so. These guys are absolutely thunderous and crushing, though certainly balance their all-out attacks of ferocity with more technical, experimental aspects, especially in more recent years. They've worked with Deathwish, Six Feet Under, as well as others throughout their history, which should indicate what a solid backing they have, as well as deserve.  Blacklisted are essential for anyone into hardcore, or even just getting into it, since they've got everything going on, and it's all at a top-notch level. I fucking love this band, as many others do, so enjoy.

A few notes on their discography: their very first release, a demo from 2003, isn't below separately, but can be found on We're Unstoppable, which is a compilation that combines both that demo and the EP Our Youth Is Wasted. The whole album is phenomenal. So, You Are A Magician? is an EP that actually only includes the first three songs, but the version I have is a Japanese one that also includes two songs from a compilation, a demo song, and their Live On BBC 1 session.
