Knocked Loose

Knocked Loose are a five-piece hardcore band Oldham County, Kentucky that formed in 2013. Their debut full-length came out last year on Pure Noise. This band has gotten requested again and again, thus why I'm finally putting them on here. To be perfectly honesty, I've never really given much of a listen to this band, but from the little I've heard they've got a chuggy breakdown-heavy form of hardcore thing going on. If there's anything in their discography that's missing, let me know! Enjoy.

Pop Unknown

Pop Unknown are a five-piece emo/indie band from Austin, Texas that were originally around from 1999 to 2002, though they have played reunion shows in 2009 and 2014. Notably, their original drummer was Gabe Wiley formed Mineral, who started this band just after their initial break-up. However, Pop Unknown made a name for themselves, putting out some fantastic music of their own, mostly through Deep Elm Records. They expanded on the underground "emo" sound that had evolved through the 90's, and added in some progressive punk influence of their own. This band has been getting a ton of requests, so I figured I'd finally throw them on here. Keep in mind there are some splits, compilation tracks, and a demo missing, but both full-lengths and their EP are here, as well as one compilation appearance (which is beyond amazing, I might add). Enjoy.

Q And Not U

Q And Not U were a three-piece (originally a four-piece) post-hardcore band from Washington, DC that formed in 1998 and broke up in 2005. They released all their material through Dischord Records, and are one of many amazing bands on their roster. Their debut LP, No Kill No Beep Beep is an absolute classic, and their only release as a four-piece. The band plays these off-kilter, dissonant rhythms, with strong melodic vocals and oddly dance-able beats. It's a very unique, jagged sound, that kisses distinctly Q And Not U. They released two follow-ups as a three-piece (two guitarists, no bassist) that continued down the dance-post-punk goodness. Essential post-hardcore right here, enjoy.

Burn

Burn are a four-piece hardcore band from New York that formed in 1989. This band's got a pretty intriguing history, especially considering their debut full-length is only now coming out (in 2017). Burn went through a handful of members in its nearly 30-year on-and-off run as a band, some of which were involved in other notable projects such as Quicksand, Glassjaw, Inside Out, 108, and Orange 9mm.

During their initial run, which lasted from 1989 to approximately 1992, the band only released one EP, a self-titled one on Revelation Records. Though it is a classic NYHC release, this is all the band would ever put out in their first era. A decade later, the band reformed in 2001. They released the long-awaited follow-up EP to Burn, as well as another EP the following year containing demos recorded in 1992. Now there EP's and over ten years into their time as a band, another decade would pass until the next EP dropped, which yielded 2016's aptly-titled From The Ashes, on Bridge 9. Now, in September 2017, Burn's debut full-length album is out, Do or Die, on Deathwish Records. This is a fantastic listen and some of my most highly recommended hardcore albums to drop this year. Enjoy.

Dag Nasty

Dag Nasty are a four-piece punk/melodic hardcore band from Washington, DC that have an extensive and incredibly influential history. They're now heralded as one of the earliest and most defining bands to come out with a "melodic hardcore" sound, blending the early high-speed aggression of early hardcore with defined melodies in the vocals and guitar leads.

Dag Nasty formed in 1985, just after the first wave of hardcore bands from DC had all broken apart. They took clear influence from bands from that era such as The Faith, as well as guitarist Brian Baker's former band Minor Threat (he'd also play in Bad Religion years later). Baker is currently the only member to have been in the band for its entire tenure, though bassist Roger Marbury and drummer Colin Sears come close. There have been numerous notable changes to the band's vocalist. Beginning with founding member Shawn Brown, who was initially only around for the first few months. Demos recorded with him on vocals were released years later as Dag With Shawn. He has since reunited with the band as of 2012, and is their current frontman.

After Brown,  Dave Smalley (who also a member of DYS and later All) took the mic. During Dag Nasty's original incarnation, he only sang on the band's debut record, Can I Say, which was originally released by Dischord in 1986. This is often cited as their best and most influential album, and I'm inclined to agree with that. This is essential listening for fans of 80's punk or anyone whose got an affinity for fast-paced catchiness.

After Dave left, Pete Cornter took the vocal helm, and sang on the band's follow-up, Wig At Denko's, another absolute classic. He would join the band again on 1988's Field Day, which is their only album in which Baker is the sole original member to appear. This was a much poppier record than the previous two, but still worth checking out if you're interested. Shortly after, they broke up.

Fast-forward to 1992, and they reunite, with Dave back on vocals and a follow-up album returning to their hardcore roots is released. The Can I Say line-up would stay the same from 1992-2002, though with limited activity until their last full-length to date, 2002's Minority of One. The band went back to limiting Dag's activity (mostly due to its members other commitments) after the release of this album. Then in 2012, they reunite again, this time with original vocalist Shawn Brown, and now we have come full circle. This new/old line-up released a 7" last year through Dischord, which is their first new material since 2002, and their first "official" record with Shawn on vocals (not counting the comp of early demos put out in 2010).

Long story short, Dag Nasty are quintessential hardcore, and one of those bands that your favourite bands probably always mention. Get on this ASAP, since this post has been due-over since April 23, 2012. Good to be back. Enjoy.

Wristmeetrazor - I talk to god... PREMIERE

I'm happy to announce the premiere of this new 7" from Virginia's Wristmeetrazor. This band got their start earlier this year with the release of a fantastic demo, and are now back with this new 7". I talk to god... is the the first of a double 7" EP being released through Zegema Beach Records, a fantastic Canadian-based label who have put out a slew of incredible screamo releases. This new Wristmeetrazor EP is a fantastic addition, containing 4 tracks of screamo/emo violence influenced by the likes of Neil Perry, Hassan I Sabbah, Raein, and Mihai Edrisch. The second 7", ...but the sky is empty, is slated for release later this year, along with a physical pressing. They're also playing a couple shows at the end of this month, so if you're in the area, I'd suggest checking them out. Highly, highly recommended. Enjoy!

Frail Hands

Frail Hands are a five-piece screamo/hardcore band from Halifax, Nova Scotia that formed in 2017 (presumably). They just released their debut, which is nothing short of incredible. The band plays this melodically discordant (I'm aware of the oxymoron) brand of "skramz" that's slightly reminiscent of bands like Loma Prieta and Lord Snow. Their self-titled debut is also one of the best screamo albums to come out of Canada in the past couple years (and there have been a ton of good ones). This really caught me by surprise and absolutely blew me away, so I'm sure a lot of you will dig this. Enjoy.

Carlisle

Carlisle were a five-piece screamo band from Orlando, Florida that were initially around from 1996-1999 (approximately, not 100% sure on that). They played an intense yet oddly catchy and melodic style of screamo that is truly unique to them. Pop punk-influenced screamo doesn't really seem like a good description, but I can't think of any other way to explain it. Just listen. During their initial existence, they only released two 7"'s and put out a handful of songs on various compilations. In 2006, a full discography album was released, containing 8 newly recorded songs by the band, in addition to all their previously released material and a handful of demo tracks. Enjoy.

Dad Thighs

Dad Thighs are a five-piece emo/screamo band from Vancouver, British Columbia who have been around since 2013. Earlier this year they put out an incredible album, The Ghosts That I Fear, which is a highlight emo release this year. Dad Thighs incorporate sing-spoken vocals, noodly guitar work and screamo-tinged sad jams to construct some breath-of-fresh-air emo. This is highly, highly recommended, especially for fans of a lot of other shit that's been posted on this blog. Enjoy.

No Omega

Yes, I'm alive. Not dead or doing porn (among other stranger speculations). I've had this post sitting in "drafts" for over four months. I figured it's only fitting to make it the first one up after an unexpected hiatus for an unexpectedly long time. Sorry it's been so long, but I am back (hopefully for good). Expect to see new posts often, and I've been updating old ones with all the new releases I've missed.

No Omega are a four-piece hardcore/screamo band from Sweden that formed in 2010. Since then, they've released a fantastic stream of dark, melodic, modern hardcore with a tinge of screamo influence. Their most recent release, Culture (featuring hit single "Bad and Boujee"), is nothing short of fantastic, and fans of bands like Touché Amoré, Killing The Dream, More Life, Converge, Birds in Row, and Loma Prieta will undoubtedly dig this. Definitely one of my highly recommended hardcore releases of the year. Enjoy.
