Arrows In Her

Arrows In Her are a four-piece emo/indie/post-hardcore band from New Jersey that formed in 2012. At the time, they put out this fantastic EP, leaving., which is finally being followed up with a full-length that dropped in July. Needless to say, I'm pretty pumped, since their debut is nothing short of fantastic. They play a midwestern-emo influenced blend of indie and punk that's somewhat similar to bands like Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) and Joie de Vivre. They've got the bright, noodly guitar sounds of a Kinsella band going, but with the upbeat energy of a punk band like Title Fight, or something like that. The vocals and lyrics also deserve a noteworthy mention, since they're incredibly catchy and memorable. Emotional and intricate, Arrows In Her take 90's indie/emo and give it a breath of fresh air, much like the aforementioned bands. Enjoy.

This Time Next Year

This Time Next Year were a five-piece pop punk band from Walnut Creek, California that formed in 2006 and broke up in 2012. They put out two fantastic full-lengths, that would appeal to pop punk bands across the board. From earlier acts like The Movielife and Kid Dynamite, to modern bands like The Wonder Years, are your thing, or more modern-era bands like The Wonder Years, Four Year Strong, etc., or even the obvious New Found Glory, This Time Next Year were a straight-up fantastic pop punk band that I can't say enough good things about. They're a personal favourite of mine, and highly recommend giving them a listen. They're catchy as all hell, and each song really stands out, which is rare in this particular genre. If you haven't heard 'em, get into 'em. Enjoy.

Head North

Head North are a four-piece indie/pop punk/emo band from Buffalo, New York that formed in 2013. They play a melancholic brand of alternative rock that brings to mind other great bands such as Manchester Orchestra, Have Mercy, and Turnover. Head North bring the catchy melodies of a modern pop punk band and combine them with the dramatic dynamics of Brand New. They've got a full-length on the way, so I'll be sure to get that on here as soon as it's released. Until then, here's their discography to date. Enjoy.

Wild Moth

Wild Moth are a four-piece post-punk band from the Bay Area (San Francisco), California that formed in 2012. They play a dark and noisy style of punk that prominently features loud, angular reverb-laden guitars that are balanced out by the heavy low-end melodies of the bass. The vocals make for some memorable melodies that bring a sense of catchiness to the band's raw energy. Overall, they blend post-punk, indie, shoegaze, and punk together nicely to create a distinct sound that would appeal to fans of classic bands like Joy Division, Sonic Youth, and My Bloody Valentine, as well as modern bands like Creative Adult and Cloakroom. Enjoy.

Book Of Caverns

Book Of Caverns were a five-piece screamo band from Edmonton, Alberta that formed in 2009 and just recently called it quits in 2016. Along with their recent end came their final release, No Seeds Left To Sow, which is fantastic. Book Of Caverns also appeared on a four-way split with some other incredible bands, namely Lizards Have Personalities and ¡Silencio, Ahora, Silencio!, as well as fellow Alberta scream queens Todos Caerán. As far as their sound goes, I like to think of them as a blend of atmospheric post-rock and the emotional outpouring of a French skramz band, like Daitro or something along those lines. Also a nice dash of midwestern emo, just for good measure. They've given us a ton of great material, so as sad as it is to see them go, at least they've left us with some good shit. Edmonton and Calgary have both been an amazing source of good screamo in the last few years, so if you like this band, look into others from there, there's been some phenomenal stuff coming out. Enjoy.

Knowing We'll Never Grow Up

Knowing We'll Never Grow Up were a five-piece screamo/emo band from Salt Lake City, Utah that were around from 2011 to 2013. This is for fans of skramz with that clean, midwestern emo-sounding guitar work, on top of the high-pitched screaming. They're pretty comparable to bands like Merchant Ships and Age Sixteen, so if you're into those you'll definitely take a liking to Knowing We'll Never Grow Up. That's about it, really. They only ever put two things out, a full-length and a split with another great band I'd suggest checking out, Treehouse. Enjoy.

Debaser

Debaser were a four-piece hardcore band from Stoughton, Massachusetts that formed in 2008 and broke up in 2010. They really only released one EP in their time, along with a handful of demos. They were supposed to put something out with 6131 Records, but broke up before anything became of it. If you dig straight-up good hardcore, whether it be from Boston or the Bay Area, you'll dig Debaser. Their one EP, Rich White Boys is their only official release. All their other demos/unreleased material are compiled as a make-shift discography if you want to check out the rest. Enjoy.

This Will Destroy You

This Will Destroy You are a post-rock band from San Marcos, Texas that formed in 2004. They self-recorded and self-released their debut EP Young Mountain in 2005 before giving it a proper release in 2006. Ten years later, the band is still celebrated as being one of the best post-rock acts to come out in recent years, and have established themselves as a name of their own. However, to return to Young Mountain, it's hard not to bring up this fantastic debut without making a very strong comparison to a certain other Texas post-rock band, Explosions In The Sky. The gentle guitar arpeggios, reverberated tremolo picking, and climatic build-ups are all staples of both band's sounds.

This Will Destroy You continued this guitar-driven atmospheric sound into their debut full-length, where they crafted even grander sonic landscapes that are as immersing as they are soaring. They expanded their palette to include more electronic tinkerings and longer, more ambient breaks in melody. Essentially they were setting themselves apart from the "Your Hand In Mine" comparisons of their still-gorgeous sound they established on Young Mountain.

2011 brought a large shift in tone for the band, with the release of their second full-length Tunnel Blanket. For one, it's a much darker record than their previous efforts, both in terms of sound and visual aesthetic. It's a little more comparable to a band like Russian Circles, though still very much set apart as its own entity. The band brings in elements of drone and doom metal, with a more despairing tone that eschews the cliche crescendo/climax format of their earlier material. Another Language furthers this, bringing in a noisier, heavier, and more chaotic sound to their now very diverse arsenal of sounds to experiment with. Like any great band in this realm of music, This Will Destroy You can perfectly balance violent storms with serene calms, and this juxtaposition makes for some very captivating and endearing music. I know this band has been highly requested, so I'm happy to finally have them up on here. Enjoy.

The Reptilian

The Reptilian are a three-piece post-hardcore/screamo band from Kalamazoo, Michigan that formed in 2008. In terms of sound, they play an intricate brand of screamo that takes a lot of cues from Midwestern emo, with the twinkly, reverb-heavy guitar sounds and such. Throw in some complex drum patterns and shouted vocals, and The Reptilian make for a very interesting listen. These guys are incredible musicians with a solid amount of output in the past few years, so there's no shortage of awesome here. I'd recommend Full Health if you're new to them, because that thing is full of phenomenal songs. Enjoy.
