Sunny Day Real Estate

Sunny Day Real Estate are a four-piece indie/emo/post-hardcore band from Seattle, Washington. The band was formed in 1992 by guitarist/vocalist Dan Hoerner, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer William Goldsmith. This original version of Sunny Day Real Estate recorded a few demos and 7"'s, which are much more akin to the hardcore/grunge sound that existed at the time. The band's now-popular sound came together with the addition of Jeremy Enigk, who took over on lead vocal duties, plus added a rhythm guitar section, which left Hoerner to provide backing vocals and play lead guitar. It was with this line-up that the band's classic debut album Diary, was released. This album featured long, drawn-out grooves with intensive dynamics, melodic dual guitar work, and lyrics/vocals that were very passionate and poetic. This album is a classic within the "emo" genre, and has continued to be one of the most influential albums in emo and indie since its release.

The success of Diary brought the band to instant acclaim, which was backed by a vigorous touring schedule. The follow-up to Diary was recorded and released in 1995, just as the band had broken up for the first time. This new album is known by a few names, either Sunny Day Real Estate (since it is the only thing written on the cover), LP2 (which was Sub Pop's distribution name for it), or The Pink Album (because the cover was entirely pink). Although this new album didn't spawn the classics that Diary had like "Seven" or "In Circles", it is still held in high esteem, and is a solid album from front to back.

After the band's break-up, Enigk and Hoerner went their separate ways, but Mendel and Goldsmith joined a band that was just starting out. This little band was the Foo Fighters, formed by Dave Grohl just after Nirvana's demise. Sunny Day Real Estate reformed in 1997, with Enigk, Hoerner, and Goldsmith (who had just left the Foo Fighters), though Nate Mendel would continue on to be the Foo Fighters' bassist, even today. A new SDRE album was released in 1998, titled How It Feels To Be Something On. This was followed by 2000's The Rising Tide, which was their last full-length. These two albums are both solid in their own right, but didn't quite have the same impact as their first two albums. They broke up a year later, in 2001.

Sunny Day Real Estate wouldn't reunite until 2009, in which they returned to play Coachella in 2010, among other shows. They attempted to record an album as well, but no release came out of it. The band hasn't been active since 2013, though they did release a split with Circa Survive for 2014's Record Store Day, with their first new song since 2000.

This band is essential for everyone to hear, especially the first two albums. None of your favourite bands would exist if it weren't for Sunny Day Real Estate, so listen, enjoy, and marvel at the music this band has been able to make in their time. Xibalba

The word "heavy" can't be fully understand until you've heard Xibalba, otherwise known as blunt force trauma at its strongest. This five-piece formed in Pomona, California, and have been demolishing since 2007. Although they are a hardcore band first and foremost, they mix elements of death and doom metal into the frenzy (with influence from bands such as Morbid Angel and Obituary). Xibalba have worked with hardcore/metal staples Southern Lord and A389, which only adds to their testament as being one of the best bands around now. They've dropped three blistering albums, with each just getting better and better. Their newest, Tierra Y Libertad, was just released, so definitely check that out. It will definitely be one of the biggest releases in hardcore of 2015. Their back catalogue is just as good, so enjoy.

Comadre

This is a band that should have been on here from day one. Regardless, better late than never, and thanks for the constant requests for them, it was a good reminder to finally introduce one of the best bands from the past ten years to this blog.

Comadre were a five-piece hardcore/screamo band from Redwood City, California, that formed in 2004 and disbanded in 2013. For most of their career, they remained relatively underground, though they did begin to garner quite a bit of attention with the release of their last album, Comadre. Regardless, their entire discography is absolutely phenomenal. They released four of the best albums within their genre, and were active with a ton of other great bands. Comadre's sound was energetic, to say the least. Although a lot of bands boast that adjective, very few come even close to the spastic frenzies and throat-shredding lyrical genius that Comadre was. Their songs were incredibly intense, and carried an energy even punk purists couldn't deny. They have a ton of melodic moments, whether they be quieter moments, or fun, catchy (but still screamed) choruses, they could do it all. They wrote great songs, with each being distinct from each other, they experimented quite a bit, and penned a ton of incredible lyrics to boot.

They really took what earlier bands like pg.99, At The Drive-In, and Kid Dynamite were doing, and ran with it to create their own, unique sound. I would go as far as to say that bands around today like Touché Amoré wouldn't be the same without them. Comadre were personally one of my first introductions to more modern screamo/hardcore/punk/whatever, and still remain one my favourites. I'm sure a ton of people who have not heard them will still be absolutely blown away by them, and people who have heard them will continue to. Here's their discography, most of which they've been giving away for free anyway. Definitely check them out if you're already into a lot of Bay Area punk (such as Punch, Dangers, and Loma Prieta), or just want to hear a band giving it their all. For starters, try Burn Your Bones, but everything has merit, so enjoy.

Angel Du$t are a five-piece hardcore/punk band from Baltimore, Maryland that formed in 2013. Although they hang around bands such as Trapped Under Ice, Turnstile, Diamond Youth, and Cruel Hand, their sound is much more rooted in 80's hardcore (such as the Descendents), but with their own modern take on the genre. Recently I've been thinking about the serious lack of 80's hardcore on here. Not only is it foundational to everything else on here, but also arguably the best of anything on here (protest away). Early 80's hardcore (especially the DC/Dischord stuff) was basically my gateway into punk/hardcore, and even underground music as a whole. So I think I'll try to post some of the best bands from that era, because that is a legacy that needs to be shared and kept intact, or at least I think so.

To start off, we have Boston's Jerry's Kids, formed in 1981. Right from the get go, they were loud, fast, and dirty. Young and pissed off, with no holds barred once they got going. They first appeared on the now legendary compilation This Is Boston Not LA (which is similar to Dischord's Flex Your Head from earlier that year), along with other noteworthy bands such as Gang Green and The F.U.'s. This made west coast hardcore bands sound almost refined in comparison (maybe with the exception of The Germs, who they probably took influence from). The playing is spastic, the vocals throat-shredding, and they played with an angry desperation that always took the forefront to perfection and cleanliness. After their original singer had to leave the band, bassist Rick Jones took over on vocals, and would continue in that role for the remainder of the band's existence. The band dropped Is This My World? in 1983, which is easily one of the most classic hardcore records from this era (in my opinion second tier only to the obvious ones such as Damaged or Bad Brains' self-titled).  Is This My World? is the sound of a young band finally coming into their own. Every instrument seems to still be rolling over each other in a spastic frenzy, but this chaos is at an intensive peak that is undeniable. They had the songs, some musical talent, and enough passion and energy to demolish a stage (literally).

In 1984, they broke up, but reformed two years later in 1986. They released another album in 1989, entitled Kill Kill Kill, which sounded more like the speed metal sound that was popular at the time rather than their early material. Though they still are distinctly Jerry's Kids, the production is much cleaner, the songs actually manage to hold themselves together, and they feature guitar solos with some real technical capability. Though this is still a solid album, it never got the attention or praise their debut did. A year after the release, they broke up again. They did a reunion show in 1994, and nothing else until 2004, when they reunited (again). They played a few shows between 2004 and 2007, but have been inactive since and released no statement on further activity. This is a classic hardcore band, that I would recommend to anyone already into early 80's punk, or even someone just starting to gain interest in it. Drug Church

Drug Church are a five-piece hardcore/alternative rock band from Albany, New York that formed in 2011. They feature Patrick Kindlon of End Of A Year/Self Defense Family on vocals, and also share members with Push-Pit, as well as SDF. The band is currently signed to No Sleep Records. Hardcore plays a much more prominent role in their music than SDF, with chugging guitar parts with a sound big enough to recall bands such as Quicksand. Kindlon's spits words in his aggressive and dramatic voice, with a bit of a snarl added. Lyrically, they stay as socially aware and satirical as SDF, just with that hardcore/punk edge and bite emphasized. Overall, Drug Church are an incredibly solid band with numerous solid efforts already released, all of which are worth a listen. Thanks to Jacob Shumaker for the help with this one, and enjoy.

CityCop

CityCop are a four-piece band from Ashtabula/Akron, Ohio, that formed in 2010. They are probably the most prominent (and maybe only) acoustic screamo band around. Yes, you read that right. Acoustic screamo. All the drum blasts and frantic guitars are still present, just done on an acoustic guitar instead. As you can imagine, it's a unique sound. The vocals are as one would expect from a modern screamo band, and CityCop find their sound fitting in with bands like The Saddest Landscape and Old Gray. However, CityCop certainly have some elements that differentiate them. For one, the vocals are sometimes sung, and sometimes spoken (in a Listener sort of way). The guitars also include some math rock-esque parts, often getting intricate in addition to melodic. In their short time, they've evolved a lot, and have become an incredibly solid and commendable force within their genre. Any fan of modern screamo or post-hardcore must have heard of them by now, since their name has been thrown around for so long, but only recently have they been getting a lot of attention very quickly, and for good reason. This is a band that I'm sure a ton of people who frequent this site would like, so do check them out. Enjoy.
