So, it's that time of year again. That time to scrounge and scramble to listen to all music that was put out in the past year that you never got around to initially, but have to now properly construct your end-of-year best-of list. So, to make life easier, I figured I'd compile all the links for albums released this year in one massive post. This way if there's anything you missed or want to revisit, bam, it's right here. I will be posting my own best-of list soon, but for now feel free to share some of your favourites album and such, I'm really curious to know!

Slow Bloom
Slow Bloom are a four-piece punk/post-hardcore band from Santa Rosa, California. They just released their debut self-titled EP, which is a seminal piece of work. Slow Bloom have garnered a lot of immediate attention since most of their members also play in State Faults (who you should also definitely check out if you haven't already). However, the minute you hear Slow Bloom, that relationship can easily be forgotten, since they immediately stand out as their own entity. For one, Slow Bloom have got ENERGY. The first track, "Teeth Marks" features a blistering riff, with vocals being shouted with such punk grit, but somehow come off as catchy. The band makes full use of dissonant chords as well, harkening back to post-hardcore greats At The Drive-In. The next two songs continue to punch out this formula, without getting repetitive. The band also incorporates tonalities from atmospheric/gothic post-punk, making them sound like a cross between Self Defense Family and Creative Adult, while still retaining an unmistakable originality. Overall, Slow Bloom manage to knock out three absolutely stellar tracks, which make me look forward to what they have to do next. This is a great punk EP, which is such a simple thing to say, but also a massive compliment, since too many bands settle on being derivative instead of trailblazing down their own path, which is exactly what Slow Bloom does here. Enjoy.

Full Of Hell
Full Of Hell are a four-piece hardcore/noise/experimental band from Maryland and Pennsylvania formed in 2009. They are known for their insane blend of punk, sludge, grindcore, powerviolence, noise, and electronic experimentation into their sound, which makes them stick out as one of the most blistering acts modern hardcore has to offer. They also put on a crazy live show, so be sure to take advantage of that if the opportunity is ever presented. Their sound is incredibly dark and dissonant, and can at times be droning, and others completely frenzied. So far, they've put out two crushing full-lengths, as well as numerous splits with other great bands. Most recently, they released a collaborative album with the legendary Merzbow, which has been getting a ton of attention, and for good reason. As the year ends, I'm sure it'll slide into a lot of best-of 2014 lists very soon. Enjoy.

Craft
Craft are a four-piece black metal band from Dalecarlia, Sweden. They formed in 1994 under the name "Nocta" before changing it to Craft in 1998. I know I don't usually post bands within this realm of music, but this is a band that has to be heard by any fan of extreme/aggressive music. As far as black metal goes, Craft are pretty accessible (I use this word very loosely). The tremolo-picked guitars, shrieked vocals, fast-paced songs and visual aesthetic are still all present, but with a few unique touches. For one, Craft's production is pretty clear and solid, especially on their last album. They also incorporate a lot of more straightforward heavy metal influence, especially in their riffs. I think a lot of people will be into this band, so give them a try. A good starting point is Void, especially if this genre is new to you. And let me know if you'd be interesting in seeing more bands similar to this on here.

Whirr
Whirr (originally Whirl) are a five-piece shoegaze band from San Francisco, California, that formed in 2010. Since they began, they've been getting a lot of attention, for numerous reasons. They attract attention from the Run For Cover-and-affiliates section of modern music because of their work with that label and their shows with other associated bands. They've also garnered some attention from the more indie-oriented camp because of their genre and social media presence (for better or for worse). But aside from all that, the main focus is the music itself. Whirr blend shoegaze, post-rock, and dream pop into one, and have put out numerous releases that perfect this sound. The obvious influence derivatives are My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Slowdive, but a ton of others could also be in that mix, such as Hum, Black Tambourine, and alternative rock greats Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. Whirr's sound is never tiring, since they employ numerous techniques that continue to make their music as dynamic as possible. They drench their songs and instruments in reverb and chorus, and make their way from slow, delayed, quiet echoes, to hard-hitting, fast-paced bouts of distortion and soft, melodic vocals. They feature a heavy bass sound, courtesy of Nick Bassett (formerly of Deafheaven). Whirr are a band that needs to be on everyone's radar, and seem to already be judging by the amount of requests they get, so enjoy!
