Aviator

Aviator are a five-piece post-hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2009. They were incredibly prolific for nearly a decade, putting out a ton of releases alongside two fantastic full-lengths, both via No Sleep Records. In recent years they haven't been active, though they haven't officially disbanded. It is a massive failure on my part to have left this band slip through the cracks for so many years now, as their sound is right up this blog's alley, and they were most active in its heyday. This band blends the more technical, rhythmic and melodically meandering aspects of post-hardcore acts with the raw, visceral heart-on-your-sleeve delivery of melodic hardcore. They draw influence from classics such as At The Drive-In, mewithoutYou, Bear vs. Shark and Piebald (made clear in their choice of covers), which adds a wide array of vocal and instrumental dynamics to their hardcore-influenced base. If you're a fan of bands like Touché Amoré, Defeater, La Dispute, Caravels, More Than Life, Goodtime Boys, Octaves, and so many more that were kicking around in the early 2010's, Aviator absolutely has to be on your radar. It's not a direct comparison in terms of sound, but in terms of modern elevation and emotional resonance. Enjoy.

Dæphne

dæphne are a three-piece emo/indie band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2014. Though I can't find any info on an official break-up, they haven't been active since 2017. In that three-year period, they put out a demo, album, and EP, which hits the quota for a midwest emo band. They crafted these super sad jams, with clean guitars meandering through melancholic scales, with somber, confessional vocals drifting atop. This band also managed to shift dynamics seamlessly, with crescendos hitting big highs with a coating of distortion, bringing in some shoegaze-y aspects to their sound. Personally, their demo is probably my favourite release, but that's partially because it was the only thing I had heard before going back through the archives and discovering they released more.  Regardless, this is highly recommended, enjoy.

SSD

SSD were a five-piece hardcore band Boston, Massachusetts that were active from 1981 to 1985. They began as a four-piece under the Society System Decontrol, but went by SS Decontrol. They were foundational in establishing the Boston hardcore scene, and are also regarded as one of the first straight bands to crop up. Their debut LP The Kids Will Have Their Say came out in 1982, with a follow-up EP Get It Away coming out the following year. Both of these are staples of early hardcore punk, and should not be missed. The EP in particular is absolutely incredible. They were a four-piece prior to its recording, so the addition of a second guitarist brings the material to a new frenzied level.

By 1984 they officially had shortened their name to its abbreviation, subequently going by SSD. Their sound changed a fair bit too. They began moving away from their punk origins and venturing into more metal-inspired territory, with the pace slowing down and the inclusion of actual guitar riffs and solos. 1984's How We Rock is still a fairly straight-forward hardcore record, but they had mostly shed that skin by the time of 1985's Break It Up. They called it quits after that, and haven't had any kind of official reunion since. A compilation was released in 1992 containing unreleased session tracks and a handful of live songs. Enjoy.

Piebald

When it comes to highly requested and long overdue bands to post, this undoubtedly ranks amongst the most commonly cited. It only took 10 years to get around to doing . This is mainly because I didn’t have what I felt like was an appropriate portion of their discography to warrant posting. Even with the constant requests, sharing incomplete discographies bothers me to no end. So finally, I’ve got nearly everything they ever released, and they can finally make their long-awaited appearance on here, just shy of going into to our 11th year.Piebald are a four-piece emo/indie/pop punk band from Andover, Massachusetts that formed in 1994. Its member included vocalist/guitarist Travis Shettel, guitarist aaron Stuart, bassist Andrew Bonner and drummer Jon Sullivan (who was later replaced by Luke Garro). They initially started out as a hardcore band, developing early ties with bands such as Cave In, who they still play shows with to this day. They quickly evolved to incorporate more dynamic and melodic elements, taking influence from the burgeoning emo and indie scene at the time. Their debut full-length was released in 1997 by Hydra Head, another indicator of their more extreme origins, though the music on it had mostly shed that sound. It was quickly followed by their sophomore album in 1999.

By this point they had really established their distinct sound, which blended the syncopated dual guitar melancholy of Sunny Day Real Estate with the energetic power pop of Weezer. Toss in some Fugazi and Jawbreaker influence to boot too. While their lyrics were still personal and heartfelt, they also brought a more light-hearted, almost comedic approach to songwriting, particularly with their song titles. This really set them apart as being a little more "fun" than some of their peers, though they could still hit a resonant emotional cue when they wanted to.
They took a brief hiatus in 2000, but were back in full force by 2002. That same year, they put out We Are The Only Friends We Have, which brought the band some mild commercial success. This was in part due to the underground sound they had been working with began to gain some mainstream traction, thanks to bands like Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional. Piebald went on to release two more full-lengths in the 2000’s, both of which were put out by SideOneDummy. They officially disbanded in 2008, but briefly reunited in 2010 to play a few shows. They also released a three-volume series compiling all their early unreleased and unavailable material, which includes almost everything up until All Ears All Eyes All The TimeThey‘ve since reunited on a full-time basis, having played shows semi-consistently since 2016. They also released their first new material in years back in 2019, which was a Christmas EP, so the timing in posting this couldn't be more appropriate. To wrap it up, Piebald are a certified classic and essential of the poppier side of the emo spectrum, and I am thrilled to finally be able to share them with ya. If you're new to this band, We Are The Only Friends We Have is probably the most common starting point, though I'm actually partial to the rawer If It Weren't For Venetian Blinds, It'd Be Curtains For Us All. Enjoy.
