New Forms

New Forms are a four-piece screamo/emoviolence band from Boston, Massachusetts that began in 2019. Even before hearing them, I was already sold on them. When a band takes its name from a flawless Calculator EP (I assume that's where it's from) and their debut EP is titled after a Ramones lyric, they just has to be fantastic. Even the cover art and colour scheme look amazing. Even after all that, I still wasn't fully prepared for the chaos they emit. I Don't Want To Live My Life Again is six tracks of spastic rhythms, heavy dissonance, angular chords, jagged guitars and powerhouse drumming, with an overall sound that falls somewhere between Capsule and Ampere. This is an absolutely incredible debut from a band you should definitely keep an eye out for. Enjoy.

Mind Eraser

Mind Eraser are a hardcore/powerviolence band from Boston, Massachusetts that began in 2003, and I'm not sure if they ever officially broke up, but they haven't been active in years. They play a brutal brand of hardcore, with clear powerviolence influences and even hints of sludge and death metal in the mix. Mint Green

Mint Green are a three-piece indie/pop punk/emo band from Boston, Massachusetts that began in 2015. Thus far they've released two EP's of catchy, sharp songwriting that's slightly reminiscent of Tigers Jaw, with some twinkle-esque lead guitar work. They've got a fantastic energy to them, and really do hammer it home with earworm after earworm. These are the kind of songs you want stuck in your head all summer. Definitely do yourself a favour and check them out. Enjoy.

The Shyness Clinic

The Shyness Clinic were a four-piece emo/indie band from Boston, Massachusetts that began in 1995 and (presumably) ended in 1999. They were on many incredible bands to come out of the underground emo scene, which means they utilize clean arpeggios and climatic octave chords, and make full use of the loud/soft dynamic. Their sound will definitely appeal to fans of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Cross My Heart, The Gloria Record, and so many more. Not to be dismissive of their sound as being similar to many, The Shyness Clinic were masters of their craft, and wrote some incredible songs that hit amazing highs and transitioned into quiet lows flawlessly. Though their output was pretty minimal (as expected from a band in this scene), it was incredibly solid and worth a listen. Plus putting a split with Everyone Asked About You is a thing of legend. Enjoy.

Casanovas In Heat

Casanovas In Heat are a four-piece punk band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2010. They play a high-energy & good-times style of punk in the vein of bands like The Replacements, which yield some chorus-laden guitars, catchy hooks, and reckless riffs played at furious speeds. After a few incredible 7"'s, they went to record their debut LP in 2015. For multiple reasons, its release was delayed until early 2018. Thankfully this thing is out, because every song absolutely shreds. This band's got great songs and a great attitude, and although they don't seem to be active anymore, have left some potent material to kick out the jams to. Enjoy.

Reveries

Reveries are a four-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2016. They play an instrumentally intricate but melodic style of screamo that hits hard without delving into absolute chaos. The vocals keep the lyrics semi-descernible (which is a good thing, they're solid lyrics), and are delivered in a screamed-spoken hybrid. Sonically, Reveries could be loosely compared to bands like Kidcrash, Shizune, Innards, and Age Sixteen, or something like that. They just released their debut self-titled album, which is out on cassette via Emo Cat Records and vinyl via Ancient Injury. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

Rained In

Rained In are a five-piece hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2018. They put out a 5-track demo a few months back. The band was formed by members of Vanna, Guns Up! and Cruel Hand, with Derek from Defeater on vocals, who sounds absolutely vicious here. Sonically, they don't really sound like an exact replica of any of their projects, they're more in the vein of Blacklisted, or something like that. Either way, this demo rips, and hopefully we'll be getting more material from them soon. Enjoy.

The Guiding Wave

The Guiding Wave are a four-piece post-punk band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2016. They share members with Youth Funeral and Fiddlehead. They play a dark, harsh style of post-punk that features thick, distorted, rhythmic bass lines, tight-knit drumming, and sharp guitar parts, like a noisier Gang of Four or Joy Division. Vocally, they are moaning and visceral, fans of bands like Iceage will definitely love the charismatic chaos that The Guiding Wave create. Their latest EP, To Dance Around Love is incredibly solid, and highly recommended. Enjoy.

Fiddlehead

Fiddlehead are a five-piece post-hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 2014. They feature Patrick Flynn, who is best known as the vocalist of Have Heart and Free, as well as Alex Henery, who is the guitarist in Basement. Their debut LP was recently released on Run For Cover. Sonically, they're heavily influenced by the DC/Dischord stuff put out in the 90's, with bands such as Jawbox, Fugazi, and Lungfish. They take a slightly more modern and melodic approach, which will definitely appeal to fans of other RFC-associated bands, such as Title Fight or Self Defense Family. Lyrically, Springtime and Blind deals heavily with the recent passing of Flynn's father, which leads to some touching moments throughout the record. This is undoubtedly one of RFC's best offerings as of late, and a fantastic album for fans of post-hardcore throughout the ages. Enjoy.

Antagonize

Antagonize are a newly-formed five-piece hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts. They are most notable for featuring Aaron Bedard (formerly of Bane) on vocals. They debuted a few days ago with a five-track demo recorded by Will Killingsworth. The band plays a heavy, metallic, noisy, and grinding brand of hardcore, with Aaron's battle cries coming off as strong as ever. This is undoubtedly a great debut for the band, who play their first show in early June. This is definitely a band to look out for, and a demo to fill your post-Bane fix with something fresh. Enjoy.

Jejune

Jejune were a three-piece (later four-piece) emo/indie band that were around from 1996 to 2000. They originally formed in Boston when all its members attended the Berklee College Of Music, but moved to San Diego in 1997. They played an energetic style of emo at the beginning of their career that can be loosely compared to bands like Jawbreaker, Christie Front Drive or early Jimmy Eat World (who they put out a split with). As they progressed, they began to develop a jangly-pop song, featuring clean bright guitars. Into the mid to late stages of their career, they start taking influence from elements of shoegaze, most notably in the heavily distorted guitars and reverberated vocals. They are also known for the interplayed, dual vocals, which had a knack for harmony and some striking melodies. Overall, this band isn't nearly as well-known as they should be, and definitely stand out among their "emo" contemporaries as being truly unique. Highly. highly recommended. Enjoy.

Ten Yard Fight

Ten Yard Fight were a five-piece hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 1995 and broke up in 1999. Along with other Boston bands such as In My Eyes, they were a major factor in the revitalization of youth crew and straight edge in their era. Additionally, Ten Yard Fight were known for their football influence (the American kind, sport not band). They would occasionally play shows decked out in football gear, and some lyrics touched upon the sport. For the most part though, what they are remembered for is their passion and energy, which exploded in a relatively short of span, and across a handful of solid releases.
