End Of A Year Self Defense Family

This is the band that has been requested non-stop, and for good reason. They are a great band with a ton of material, none of which is fully collected in one place. So, here is the very-near complete discography of End Of A Year Self Defense Family.

This band began in 2003, and have had a revolving door of members ever since, with the only consistent member being vocalist Patrick Kindlon. They are mainly from Albany/Cohoes, New York, though they've had members from all around.  Their original name, End Of A Year, is taken from an Embrace song, which is fitting since their early sound is heavily based on the sound of early Washington DC/Dischord bands such as Rites Of Spring and Lungfish. Though they've progressed a lot since their beginning, they are still distinctly known for their post-punk energy, angular guitar tones, odd chords/melodies, and Kindlon's very unique vocal style and impassioned voice. Their sound is still as personal and compelling as their influential origins, though this band tend to incorporate a lot more overtly political material, mixed in with satire and pop culture references. The name Self Defense Family was adopted between 2010 and 2011. They put out their first full-length, Try Me, out under that name this year. They've only put out four full-lengths, but quite literally seven times that amount in splits and EP's. Throughout their career, they've worked with a multitude of notable labels, including Deathwish, Run For Cover, Triple B, Revelation, and Iron Pier. This is an incredibly prolific band, with a ton of solid material out, most of which has finally been compiled in one place. That couldn't have been done without the massive help of Jacob Shumaker, so much credit is due to him. Enjoy this End Of A Year, and have a happy new one!

Also, though close to all of their material is here, there's a few things missing. The entire Segwei split and More Songs About Transportation and Intercourse are the two most notable things They were found, thanks for sending them to me. In addition, the Stalwart Sons side of the split is missing, though the SDF side is there. Their split with Fires is all in one track, so if anyone has the individual songs, or anything mentioned before, sending them or anything else you have would be insanely appreciated. This is such a good and prolific band, so gathering all their material in one place is so important to share and preserve their legacy. Thanks so much.

Old Man Gloom

Old Man Gloom are a four-piece sludge metal/ambient/post-metal/hardcore band originally from Sante Fe, New Mexico, but are now active in Boston, Massachusetts. The band formed in 1999, and is comprised of members from other very notable bands, particularly Aaron Turner (Isis), Nate Newton (Converge), Caleb Scofield (Cave In), as well as Santos Montano on drums. They were active in the early 2000's, put took a long hiatus to focus on their main projects. They returned for 2012's No, and released an amazing set of albums all titled The Ape Of God in 2014. They don't play live often, though based on live sets online, they seem like an incredible act. Besides that, they've released a slew of albums that we do have to enjoy. The Ape Of God and Christmas are personally my two favourites, though everything they've done is so intriguing and burgeoning. Old Man Gloom will definitely arouse your interest if you're a fan of the aforementioned bands, or if you simply appreciate bands that are pushing limits and experimenting with music, especially within more extreme/heavy genres. Enjoy.

Note: The "Promo Version" was initially released for music reviewers, since it would be leaked through them. The real albums came after, and are technically two different albums under the same name and artwork. This was done as a way of adding to the surprise of a new release in the era of online music, in which new and surprising forms of release are scarce.
